I'm currently building my senior schedule, and I've run into an issue. I've taken every AP course offered at my school, and my current schedule looks a little bit like this: 4 AP classes, 2 Honors, and 1 unweighted (an art class). My guidance counselor has offered me a study period, where I can take AP Computer Science online. However, I'm not a huge fan of FLVS, and even though I'm going into a STEM field and will probably use Comp Sci in the future, I would rather keep my current schedule and not risk the extra AP in a medium that I'm not fond of. In total, I would have 11 AP classes under my belt if don't take Comp Sci, and 12 if I do. When I've taken that many classes, does one extra really make a difference to colleges (especially since it isn't even offered at my high school, but online)?

Keep in mind that I plan to apply to some very competitive schools (UNC Chapel Hill, Uni. of Virginia, and Rice) and I need all the help I can get, but is cramming in one extra AP class really going to give me that much of an edge?

Unless you plan on being a comp sci major, you really don’t need the class. If your performance up thru 11th grade will get you into one of those schools, your senior year workload will not hold you back (AO’s are looking at the rigor of your 12th grade schedule, and yours is fine).

I don’t think there is any difference… Unless you are applying engineering schools that the AP CS may be helpful. You have 7 hours on the schedule already and you have exhausted the AP resources at your school. That is pretty rigorous course load.

I can’t imagine any college would look at your app with 11 APs and be like, “ehh, would’ve accepted this person, if ONLY this person had one more AP”.

I took all AP and it helped tremendously. I always tell people to take as many AP classes as possible. It’s not that challenging and you can do it. Take it

I’ve decided not to take the course, since I’m uncomfortable with online classes and it has the potential to do more harm than good. If anything, I’ll be taking dual enrollment Calculus my second semester, as I was unable to take it due to schedule conflicts. Thank you for you input!
