Does an interview generally help much???????????is it going to increase my chance of getting in?or decrease?

They honestly don’t make a big impact either way, and your grades/scores/essays are BY FAR more important than your interview. Generally, your interview can’t really hurt you, and if a school asks for one, then you should/need to do it.

If you live nearby (within several hours driving distance), the school ‘recommends’ an interview and you don’t do it, it will hurt. It shows a lack of “demonstrated interest” which some schools (mostly the LACs) take into consideration.

On the flip side, if you live far away, if they say the interviews are informational only, and/or they don’t offer alumni interviews, it won’t count against you. If the school recommends interviews, but you have a personal hardship that prevents you from interviewing, just explain it. Schools realize that not everyone can interview. There are many ways to demonstrate interest if besides an interview.

Yes I have also heard that the interview will only give you like 1 extra point. Doesn’t seem like much.

probably not much, but it vaires between schools

The interview helps primarily as an indication of the applicant’s interest - - but, if you end up on the cusp, every little bit helps.
