Does an MBA make sense after a BBA? Or should I do International Relations for Masters after my BBA?

Right now, I am studying for a BBA and I am thinking about what Master’s degree I should go for thereafter. I find numeric courses rather hard. HOWEVER, I passed all maths, statistics and accounting courses with A grades BUT all the exams in those courses were untimed open-book or take-home exams or projects (and I don’t know I had done equally well had those exams been closed-book).

Now I am wondering what I should do after my BBA. I definitely know that I want to continue at grad school but I don’t know if I should go for an MBA. Although I scored A grades in the numeric classes, those were hard As for me which required a lot of hard work and caused me a lot of headaches.

I personally feel that I would like International Relations more for both, personal interest and personal strengths (not so numeric). My parents, however, are urging me to go for an MBA. Their main argument is that the MBA is more useful and that there is no point in me studying something that I like now if it will mean less money and worse perspectives in the future.

What would you say?

Does an MBA make sense after a BBA?

Is an MBA a lot harder than a BBA?

Would a Master’s degree in International Relations really be useless if I want to get a nice job later on?

What about the fact that I would already have a BBA? I mean, there are people who study like history or English literature at undergrad and then an MBA… or history or English lit and then a JD and still work in business at high positions afterwards…

The top MBA programs don’t want you until you have worked for a few years, so no need to worry about that now.

In the meantime, the received wisdom on grad school is not to go until you have a clear reason for choosing the program you choose.

“Would a Master’s degree in International Relations really be useless if I want to get a nice job later on?” depends entirely on what you mean by “a nice job”. A lot of people think that a job in IR would be a nice job. Do you mean a job that pays a lot of money? Fastest way to make a lot of money (besides starting your own religion, thank you L.Ron Hubbard) is to go into sales- no Masters required.

I agree completely with @collegemom3717. BBA is a professional degree…so get a job.

Does an MBA make sense after a BBA?
Definitely, but after a few years of working.

Is an MBA a lot harder than a BBA?
No. MBA is easier than BBA or any undergrad degree for that matter. The most difficult part about MBA is getting into a top business school.

“A nice job” requires a definition. Having said that, in general, to move up in the IR field takes a lot of time…experience counts.
