Hi all,
I am posting here rather than under ACT thread because I am trying to understand how colleges use the ACT numbers.
I took the ACT’s for the first time and received a composite 33 (Eng 30/Math 32/Read 32/Sci 36). My composite is obviously buoyed by a 36 on the science section. I was initially very happy with the science score. However, upon further research, I can’t seem to find a college that cares, or rather one where the score might be a benefit to my application. Any school that breaks ACT scores into components only lists english, math, and sometimes reading. The science number is never mentioned in admission statistics/charts/applications. In fact I’m not really sure why it’s part of the ACT.
I am worried that I will be categorizing schools as safety/target/reach based on weighing my composite against databases of acceptances, but then the schools will disregard the science score, effectively ‘recalculating’ my composite lower. Should I trust published ACT composite ranges in making application choices?
I am really struggling with knowing if I should be looking at ACT composite stats (33), my lowest ACT section (30), or the average of my english and math (31) when trying to determine where I am in a school’s ‘range’.
Does anyone know of a school which would actively seek students with higher science ACTs? Or are english and math the only numbers that matter?
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
