Anybody know anything about North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University besides the fact that its an HBCU. List any and everything you know ... good or bad. Thank You

bump bump!!

Lialee,

Start a new thread with the college of interest in the title. Many people won’t see this otherwise.

You may not get much feedback here on CC. A lot of the material here is geared to either 1) Ivy League or 2) well known Liberal Arts colleges or 3) Large State Universities. Altogether that probably totals to something like 400 colleges out of the 4000 colleges in the United States (my guesstimate).

Please know some excellent programs are never mentioned on CC. I took a quick look at the school you queried about and it looks like it is accredited and they post the Common Data Set on their site. You might want to look a little closer at the accreditation (I wasn’t familiar with the accreditation group but I don’t live in the south). The Common Data Set is great because it is meant for bureaucrats to compare one program to another. No reason you can’t do the same.

Please don’t think a program lacks merit because it’s not featured on this forum. I had never heard of Deep Springs College or The Webb Institute before my kiddos started the college hunt but both are immensely respected by those who are familiar with the programs and their graduates.

Anyway, I kinda think you’re asking about the quality of the pineapple while standing in the bakery department. You might get a good response but you may do better if you examine the Common Data Set and peruse the college website carefully. Any chance of talking to a guidance counselor who knows NC schools well? Good luck!

For engineering majors, the important accreditation is ABET. NC A&T is ABET-accredited for several engineering majors according to that web site.

My D’s college roommate’s little brother is a student there. That’s all I know. Except that they live in North Carolina (so should know the school well) and his mother is a teacher and/or administrator (so is knowledgeable of the academic world). They must have thought well of the school for him to attend.

Our younger son attends a smaller college here in Washington State. It rarely, if ever, makes CC posts (except when I write about it!). I consider Western Washington University a total gem of a place. They do a great job and the campus has a delightful air about it --but it is shaded out for many by the better known U of Washington in Seattle and Washington State U in Pullman.

We are fortunate that this is such a rich and diverse country. Thank goodness our high school students don’t have to excel at one exam to have a future (as in China and several other countries).

There are all sorts of college paths that are excellent (not just good). I do think it is important to be careful about choosing an accredited school and to be wary of on line colleges – but, that said, keeping an open mind about a smaller college is a clever thing to do (IMHO).

Back in the last century, when I was a grad student in agriculture at Cornell University, a number of my classmates were graduates of the HBCU ag. programs. In my (granted rather limited) observations, graduates of the Ag. & Techs. were as well-prepared for their futures as graduates of other institutions.

Ultimately, what you get out of your college education is up to you. The name on your diploma will mean less than the learning you store inside your head, and the commitment to do a good job that is inside your heart.

AGGIE PRIDE !!! I am a graduate of NC A&T State University. They are nationally ranked for undergradute engineering. I recieved a degree from The School of Techonology in Graphic Communication Systems '97. I currently work for a Civil engineering firm as the CAD Operations Manager. We also have several of the first few graduates of A&T’s 4 year Land Surveying Degree program which was the first in the state of North Carolina. NC A&T is a fine institution with a deep history and tradition (Greatest Homecoming on Earth). But like any school it has its ups & downs, it’s all what you make of it. I’m one of its success stories…
