Could someone who attends or has friends or family that attends post their thoughts.

I know a girl who graduated last year and her brother who is a junior now. They both love it.

Also a girl who transferred in last spring but left after a several weeks. I would not look on her actions as a negative on the school as she has/had issues for a couple of years.

Our daughter liked what she saw very muchand planned to attend but decided to attend college closer to home.

I would be happy to answer any specific questions you have.

My niece’s friend is at HPU because Elon rejected her. She didn’t like it at first. Called it “boring.” But her parents think that she was still pouting about Elon. Now (2nd semester) she’s doing fine.

Thanks, I do have some questions. My daughter is seriously considering High Point. We are from Mass. She has been offered a presidential scholarship and invited to the honors program. She loves the campus. She is planning on majoring in early childhood education.

What are the majors of the brother and sister? Where are they from? What is the graduate doing now?

Where did your daughter decide to attend?

The brother and sister are from a DC suburb in Maryland. The girl who graduated was an education major and liked NC so much she decided to stay and teach there. I believe she is in the Greensboro school system. Not sure what her brother is majoring in, but I will ask his mom.

My daughter decided to attend a small private college an hour from home in MD. Believe me, no one on CC has ever heard of it.

You did not ask but I will offer this - husband taught for 38 years. If your child is sure she wants to teach, I would ask her to think about a college in the state where she wants to live after graduation. Student teaching can open many doors - you get a chance to see and be seen by system. It can make getting a job easier and/or can eliminate a school or district from your consideration. Also, it does not matter what private or state college a student attends for education major, all beginning teachers in a district make the same amount of money and HP and many other private colleges are not super great with aid.

She thinks she wants education now, but who knows if she will change her mind. Right now the plan is to attend a university with other options available if she choses to switch.

If she does graduate with a degree in education and decides to come back and teach in Mass, you think she will have a problem finding a job because of the fact she graduated from High Point? Her plan at this point is to come back to Mass and get her masters here hopefully while she is teaching.

As far as private vs a state school. Because of the merit money, High Point and a few other private schools are now about the same $$ for us compared to her attending and living at one of our state schools.

No, it is not a problem if she goes out of state, my daughter has friends out of state majoring in educ and they all plan to return to MD. Just that it sometimes makes it easier for a person to choose which system they want to work for. Most school systems will help pay for her Masters.

The boy - is a forestry major - I did not know they even had that major.

Thanks again. They have many different majors and minors. My daughter is also an athlete. Not sure if she is going to try to either play soccer or run track at High Point if she attends. But she would love to coach while also teaching. High Point has a minor in athletic coaching, also exercise science. Many options available for her there.

Any current students or current parents of students out there?

bfraz - YES! And I am delighted to see HPU on here. When we were college shopping 2 years ago, it was not. I just came across the thread. But, I am not surprised. This is the first of many, many places you will be seeing and hearing about HPU. It’s most definitely up and coming.

HPU was our DD’s safety school. None of us had serious intentions of going there, but just for fun, we decided to take a visit on our way south last year. . . that’s all it took… the rest of her schools, as they say, were history.

Reflecting upon this past year, words cannot describe our delight in HPU - in all ways - academic, social, emotional - talk about a quality school - values are #1 and people really CARE about your child. Our DD had healthy, working relationships with most of her professors who she found to be approachable, inspirational, and caring. No question, DD was/is in good hands at HPU.

It is a place you cannot read about - you simply MUST visit. Once you do that, you are sure to apply. Heck, after we visited with our DD, my husband and I wanted to go there! They (HPU) “got it right”… and we are excited that our DD is a part of it. HPU is ONE TO WATCH and most definitely CHECK OUT!!

Feel free to P/M me if you have any more questions.

P.S. In further reading I see posts prioritizing academics over quality of life. I beg to differ. I am an educator and will tell you that while academics are important, a student’s mindset is moreso; if the kid’s not happy, he/she won’t learn. I’ve seen too many kids hop college to college - depressed, stressed, etc. - pressured by parents who are caught up by “names”. So, it depends upon your priorities. I know my DD is happy and getting a good education and she will be a huge success because of the person she is - HPU has motivated her more than ever to learn and be the best she can be. What more can I ask for?

SPMom - please clear your mailbox - it is full and not accepting any more P/Ms…

THANKS FOR ALL OF THE P/Ms ~ keep 'em coming. Enjoying the conversations!!!

Looking for more information about High Point University. My son is seriously considering High Point. Larger schools talk of the reputation and alumni base being important once the students graduates and enters the work force. With this university being “in transition” - how have you found employers reacting to a degree from a small school in comparison to those from larger more well known universities?

axcmom, have your son email me. j-kenyon@hvcc.edu

I’ve done intensive research on High Point and the comparisons to big schools. I’m considering HPU as a transfer school in the fall. I’ve toured the college 3 seperate times, talked to admissions counselors and the VP of enrollment. I’ve also met the president of the college. I could probably tell you more about that school than the tour guide =]
