Tulane is my absolute dream school. I am a sophmore in highschool in a small Louisiana town. I would like to know what it takes to for sure get accepted to Tulane. Of course I know all of the requirements and what is something that will help me stand out from other applicants other than test scores? Thanks.
I do not go to Tulane, but, I do know that one thing that they seem to like to see is a dedication to community service. They are the only college in which community service is a requirement to graduate. If you have demonstrated interest in community service and have participated in some form, I think that is a good way to make yourself a prototypical Tulane student. Besides, of course, the grades and test scores.
I am not from Louisiana, but I know that they have a guaranteed admissions policy for Louisiana residents. I believe that it stipulates if you have above a 3.5 UW gpa, above a 28 on the ACT, and a 1850+ on the old SAT then you qualify, given you have never enrolled in another college/college course and have no disciplinary actions on record.
@successful92 -You’re still a couple years away from submitting your Tulane application, but one important piece of it–when the time comes–will be your “Why Tulane?” essay. The more specific and genuine your essay comes across, the more you can convince admission officials that Tulane is the right place for you, and thus the better your acceptance chances.
Lots of students writing such essays resort to cliches (e.g., “From the first moment I stepped on campus, I knew this was the perfect place for me!” or “The support I will get from caring faculty will lead me to my future goals.”) So, instead, YOUR essay really needs to be about Tulane and what, exactly, you love about the school. Ideally, you will get a chance to visit campus so your essay can include what you did–and what you especially emjoyed–during your trip to New Orleans.
If you do get to campus, don’t hesitate to chat with students you encounter and ask lots of questions. Most Tulane students are delighted to chat with high school visitors and, if you should happen to talk with someone who isn’t so thrilled to talk with you, you’ll figure it out pretty quickly and can move on. Ask lots of questions and remember the answers as best you can. (Even jotting down notes isn’t a terrible idea!) Not only will the answers you receive help you to make your college plans but also your “Why Tulane?” essay will probably be very interesting if you can include some of the advice you received from real Tulane students.
If you can’t get to campus, you can engage with Tulane students, parents, and alumni right here on College Confidential. So you can ask your questions here or ask the admission office to put you in touch with a current student who is involved in a club or major that interests you. (You can often dig up some of those names and email addresses on your own via Google.)
Because you’ve got some time before you make a final college list, use some of that time to hone in on what you like best about Tulane. That way, you’ll not only convince YOURSELF that it’s a great place for you but also you can convince the admission folks when you write your “Why Tulane?” essay.
Good luck!
@Sally_Rubenstone thank you so much!!!
@successful92 - there are two threads here on the Tulane CC page where you can ask questions of current questions. The current students are TulanMaddie22 and TulaneBarry. I’m sure that they would be happy to respond to any inquiries.
You are fortunate- there is a route for Louisiana residents to get guaranteed admission to Tulane http://admission.tulane.edu/apply/now/louisiana.php
@successful92 I’m currently a senior at Tulane and happy to answer any questions you may have!
My school doesn’t offer any AP classes but we do have Dual enrollment will this affect my chance of getting a Merit Schlalrship?
