I would like some perspectives on the International Honors Program.

What do you want to know?

It’s a nice program for those who want to become rather fluent in a foreign language, who want to study in a foreign country (altho you don’t have to be in IHP to do that at UA), and/or who are majoring in something that works well with it…such as: International Business, Political Science, Communications, or many other majors.

What will your likely major be? Are you a senior or junior?

My plan was to study business as a fall-back. I want to attend undergrad at UA and law school there too. I would also like to minor in Spanish as it has always been an interest. I am a Junior.

I think IHP would work well for you as a Spanish minor and as a pre-law major.

What is your major be? I know as a pre-law student, you can major in anything you want.

BTW…if you’re pretty strong in Spanish now, and you score high in the placement exam, then you can go right into 300 level classes. Once you pass one 300 level class, you can submit paperwork and get about 10 credits for the 100 and 200 level classes that you skipped (don’t remember the exact number of credits - it’s about 10).

I have a gut feel that IHP is going to undergo a change in the near future. I think that it needs a little tweaking. It’s hard for me to put into words, but there’s a lot more potential there, and it hasn’t yet met that. It’s still a fine program, it could just be even better with a bit of tweaking.

What are your stats?

I applied and got into the IHP

My DD also applied & got accepted to the IHP. She’s planning on doing the Alabama at Oxford program and is hoping to tack on an internship at the end of her study abroad term.

I too feel that IHP is going to change soon. The format of the IHP 105/155 classes changed a couple of years ago and it looks like IHP is becoming easier to do along with UHP as IHP 105/155 count towards the 6 UH credits needed for UHP.

I’m in IHP now and like it a lot. It’s a smaller program, but not as small as CBHP. I tested out of the language requirements, which for the more common languages would be 14 credits for 101/102/201/202. IHP has some very interesting instructors, but the IHP courses for this semester were not filling up as planned. IMHO, IHP is a lot easier to do than UHP, but it could be a lot more than it already is.

Gaines0 I think one of my friends in IHP has a similar major and career plan. IHP seems to be working well for him. IHP has people of all majors, all of whom want to study abroad. I don’t know what you are asking for in terms of specific details, but I’d be happy to provide more.

I enjoy studying Spanish for its practical uses, seeing as I live in the south and Spanish is becoming a more dominant language. I am strongly considering International Business at the IHP. I will be applying to the summer school program to get some math credit out of the way and see if I want to invest 4 years of undergrad and 3 of law school at Alabama. My mother and father both went to undergrad at UA and my mother got her law degree there too. Father got his Master’s of Engineering at UA.

Just to let you know, UA does not have an international business degree. It has it as a minor for students not in the College of Commerce and Business Administration or as a specialization and/or track in some business majors, but it is not a major in and of itself.

Since you’re a junior, you need to take the ACT again. And you need to take the SAT. Some kids do a lot better on the SAT - especially if the Science Reasoning area dragged down their ACT score.

Right now, since you’re instate, you’ll get $3500 a year towards your tuition.

But, you’ll get full tuition (including increases), if you raise your ACT to a 30 or get a 1330 (M+CR) on your SAT. :)

Since you’re only halfway thru junior year, that is very do-able. Get some practice books. :)

Many people have recommended the SAT. I will try it!

Good luck…

Try to take each test within the next few months. When you register, pay the extra for the detailed score report. Then, a few weeks after you take the test, you’ll get your test booklet and answer key (with the ones you got wrong indicated).

You can use that info to work on your weak areas. Then, if needed, take the tests again in fall (before November).

I am taking the SAT March 13, 2010 and the ACT April 10. Ugh…I need that 1330 or 30!!! :)

Get some practice books…

I recommend the one by Collegeboard for the SAT, and the one by ACT called The Real ACT Prep Guide. You can order them on Amazon

What are you weak sections?

I second The Real ACT…i took their practice test and looked over their english test and got a 34 first time on the ACT

My son is doing IHP. He is starting Spanish 201 (after a two-year layoff). It’s a nice program. He took the IHP class (I believe, it was IHP 105) in the fall. As part of the program, he has to take two, 300-level classes to count toward the program’s requirement, so he will be speaking with a professor of one of his classes this spring and asking to do an additional project to count the class as honors. As for study abroad, he is interested in going to Oxford and Sweden (the program offers two classes in one of his majors, poli sci). But he will need to save some money for the trips. Oxford will run nearly $8,000 this year. Sweden runs about $7,000.

My last ACT Indicates that I am weak in just about everything! Hehe.
C-28

L-31
M-27
R-28
S-26

Well, you’re not weak in everything. Science is your lowest, so the SAT might be your stronger score.

Use the SAT practice book to practice math and CR. SAT math can be “tricky” because they will often include answers in the multiple choice, that can seem to be correct, but only if you haven’t finished answering the question.

I’m not saying that it’s ok to have a low Writing score, but since scholarships aren’t based on that for SAT, spend your study time really focusing on the math and CR.

Okay. I think my best chance will be increasing all of my sub scores two points on the ACT though.
