i don't know why they're so popular... i just hate them so much. every message i get, i can predict what the other person is going to say. but i don't believe myself, so i open it, and they say exactly what i thought they would. and bam!, there goes a dime. And then they add up. Well, my parents pay the bill anyway... but that's not the point. i just don't know why they wouldn't call.. (though i don't like phone calls either, but they're better than texts) and i never respond to the texts either, but they just keep doing it. i don't really want to say, "hey umm... stop texting me, because i just delete them since i already know what you're going to say!". ><

text messages are great when you want to talk AT someone rather than WITH someone.

I too once thought they were dumb, but now...well they're a pretty major form of communication for me. There are a lot of times when I'm in a situation where I can't talk, or I know the other person can't talk, and it's just easier.

like bigredmed said, if someone can't talk, I'll text them. Like when I call my brother and he doesn't answer, he'll send me a text saying "In class, what's up?" and I'll text him back with whatever I need to say--can i borrow the car? want to meet for lunch? or whatever it may be.

fortunately my calling plan is unlimited texts for $5 a month. i text people when i'm bored at work, when i'm in a busy place where they wouldn't be able to hear me, etc. i rarely text just to text.

There is one statistic I'd like to have:
How many textmessage say:
'I love you.'
'Don't forget to buy xxx'
'What are you doing this Friday?'
'It's over'

:-)
I agree with Bigredmed - sometimes it's easier to write than to talk.. But there's email, too..
But I haven't written a text message in.. ages.. I use them only if I know somebody can't answer calls, but is able to use his mobile phone..and I need something urgently!

I think that annoying sound is kind of a ego-boost for some kids - 'Listen! I am important! I have friends!..

I like them when, like bigredmed said, if I need to let someone know something but I'm in class or somewhere else that I can't call them, or I know they'll be at work so I can't call them. But one of my friends sends SO MANY DAMN TEXTS all the time and it's f-ing annoying. There's such thing as overkill.

Text messages are infinitely useful. How else are you going to make plans during the day when you both have classes?

yes i hate this convenient and useful feature of modern technology

I don't mind when it's used properly (i.e. in situations where other means of communication are impossible or under urgent circumstances), but it is pretty annoying when people with unlimited text plans send you non-important messages. Although it's only 15 cents per message for me, it does add up in the end.

i don't use text messages, and i find usually find it annoying when people text me...

there's this thing called voicemail for when i don't pick up. not many people have heard of it, though.

It's inherently illogical to listen to a 10 second voicemail that might do something like present to you an address. Not only would it be more clear in text, you also are wasting time entering voicemail and actually waiting to listen to the person.

Although text spamming friends can suck.

well, voicemail is free. 10 seconds is nothing, compared to how long it takes me to try to say anything in a text message. i really don't know why, people seem to fear having their voice recorded or something.

Yes. They're not covered on my cell plan, so I have to pay for each message, and every time I give someone my phone number, they wind up texting me. Not to mention that some people in my hometown keep texting me because my cell number is someone else's old number. I actually texted this one lady back who sent me about ten messages to tell her she had the wrong number and I didn't know her. She then texted me AGAIN to say she didn't believe me.

I hate cell phones in general. I hate how I can't hold any type of conversation with anyone for 5 minutes without someone getting a text message or voicemail. It's like in the middle of a conversation, ring and they started text messaging away, right in front of you, completely oblivious. It's pretty rude, get some manners!

I always make sure someone has texting before I text them. I feel bad when I find out that every text costs them money. The thing I really love about texting is that you can do anything while your texting (I hope none of you would talk on the phone in the bathroom) and that they can reply whenever they are able to. However, I absolutely HATE the chain letter ones.

Next time you see the person, just tell them that you don't have texting and it's getting expensive so they need to stop. Usually when people find out they are like "ohh I didn't know! I thought you had unlimited! Sorry..."

I'm pretty sure you can contact your wireless provider and have them block all texts so you don't end up paying for any of them. I used to have Verizon block them for me but now I use it occasionally.

Usually I just use it for quick little things. Things that I want to say to someone put I don't want to have an entire conversation with them- stuff like "I got accepted to ________ too!" or "Remember, I have tutoring today- so pick me up at 4:45."

Especially the 'reminder' one. My mom doesn't have the greatest memory for that sort of stuff, so I do a lot of "buy stamps today" kind of messages. Calling just to nag makes me feel guilty, so I put it in a text.

I HATE it when people try to have complete conversations with them. If you want to talk with me, then CALL ME. Anything more than a couple texts in a row could be much much quicker if we were just talking like normal people.

Plus, I'm a pretty terrible texter so it takes too much effort to type out an entire conversation with my thumbs when I could just call them. Bah.

Note: I don't have unlimited (10 cents each), so that's a reason why I mind more than usual, I guess.

I never texted until I entered college this year. That's what most people do here and it can get kind of annoying. But sometimes it's useful when you want to ask what someone's plans are for the night but don't feel like talking to them.

^yeah it sucks when you just want to ask what someone's plans are and they end up trying to talk to you for an hour. I like the "Oh sorry I didn't get that message" or "oh by the time I could respond it was too late" ability.

I should also mention that I talk to one of my bosses quite often through text messaging. This is because there are 10 student employees, and he sends the same text to all of us instead of having to call all 10 of us. It's quick, efficient, and everyone gets the same message. Sometimes it's related to work, like:
"remember we're starting an hour early tomorrow" or "check your e-mail asap. very important." or a message regarding something that didn't get done during the previous night shift that he wants to know why it wasn't done.

sometimes it's completely unrelated, like on New Years Eve went he sent us a text saying "Happy New Year's. Bring your A game and have a good time. See you when you get back to school."

obviously this is a pretty laid back job, but sending texts gets the message out immediately and efficiently.

I love it. I text message a lot (6,500+ a month) and I talk a lot too, normally 5,000 minutes a month. Of course some of those minutes are just my girlfriend and I alseep on the phone together but it's all good.
