just playing devil’s advocate here: the theory is that when they test your “skimming” abilities, they want to know how much you can retain in a short amount of time. the idea is that in college, you’re going to have a ton of textbook reading and stuff, and you’ll be more efficient if you go faster and retain more.

I understand what you’re saying, jax90291. However, in college, I would have 24 hours a day to read and retain quickly. That’s not nearly as bad as long, arduous passages in only 35 minutes.

i agree that you will obviously set your own pace in individualized reading, but maybe they’re trying to enforce the idea that when you’re reading for information (not for thought provocation, like classic literature), then the best way is to read fast and just get the main ideas. in their view, this method is necessary to successful college studying. again though, im not the expert on the issue, just trying to get a read on why we are tested the way we are.

Yeah. I get what you’re saying. I just get frustrated. I feel like I’m a pretty intelligent person, but I get pwned in the face by standardized testing.

Yeah, I feel that the time constraints are the only issue on the ACT. The material is fundamentally very simple.

I loathe the Reading , Science section. All of us should have at least 50 mins on those sections. The reading section you barely have 35 mins for it.

Keep in mind that, even though it’s 35 minutes, the FACT that it’s 35 minutes scares people and causes them to lose the concentration. I’m not saying all, but many. I know I was my second time. I was reading, but at the same time, my mind kept thinking, “Oh gosh, oh gosh…time contraint!” Thus, making me go through it fast and sometimes making the dumbest mistake.

@moon exactly

Like when I’m reading a passage and dont really understand a part, I really want to reread it but I know I simply dont have time so I just hope I understood it well enough to answer the questions (which often isnt the case)

By the time I get to the last passage and realize I have 5 minutes, I panic and do even worse…
