"Top Universities" section, instead of having their own special section? The Ivy League is nothing more than a sports conference established in the 1950s.

I agree, though this website caters to its users, most of which see “Ivy League” as an academic distinction as well as an athletic one, so its not likely to change.

Yeah, that does sound like a good idea.

The top universities forum should have its own link on the sidebar. It’s so annoying to have to scroll down and find the forum each time.

Curious - does anyone know what are the critieria used to determined membership in the CC “Top Universities” grouping? Looks like there is a high correspondence between the CC list and the USNWR top 30 ranked universities but is the USNWR ranking the sole factor?

Agreed. They should not have their own section just because they are part of a sports league. It perpetuates the myth on these forums that the Ivies are the only good schools out there. Just add them to the other top universities page where they belong.

Oh wow I got an overwhelming “yes” response! I think it pretty much is just top 25 on USNWR, but those are probably the best and most well-known rankings and they need to base what the “Top Universities” are on SOMETHING. I think it also has something to do with which schools have the most activity UNC is on there but Tufts isn’t.

Well I think it’s separate because there’s so much talk on CC about those schools in particular. It keeps them all bunched together and easily accessible for the many Ivy-obsessed students lurking on this website. So I think it’s more for function than for acknowledging any superiority by those colleges.

It seems to me the organizers of CC have found that enough traffic goes to the 8 Ivy fora that justify their having their own link. Don’t see it as any wide spread effort to elevate them above the rest. I can tell you that actual Ivy grads, in general, don’t see it as such. Don’t buy into it yourself, but also don’t give into the insecurity when you see “ivy league” set apart too.

“Top Universities” are those consistently in the top 25 (minus the Ivy League) that often have active posting. Or at least that’s how it’s explained; seems accurate.

Oh, I don’t. The “Ivy League” link is clearly below the “Colleges” link.

Well, it’s not like they just picked the top 8, traffic-wise (Duke, MIT, Northwestern, Stanford, UCB, UCLA, Chicago, Michigan, and UVa all have more traffic than one or more of them, just to name those in the “Top” category); it really is catering to the CC demographic, which seems to hold “Ivy League” as an academic distinction. Otherwise, it would be under the Athletic Recruiting forum.
