Does anyone enjoy poetry?

as in AP lit poetry?
I just can't get into ittttt blahhh
not an english person...how can I enjoy poetry more?

Well, songs are poetry, do you like songs? I think it depends on what kind of poetry. You just need to find some pieces that intrigue you.

A lot of poems are really melancholic…so sometimes you have to be in that kind of mood for thorough analysis and appreciation. Put yourself in the author’s shoes. Sometimes, reading a little background information on the poem/author helps as well.

T.S. Eliot

Close your eyes, breathe in the words and let them all vibrate inside your chest, and feel the rhythm beating through your veins . . .

/pretentious rambling

Seriously, go listen to some slam poetry or def poetry. Maybe you need to hear the poems spoken out loud. It might heighten your appreciation. Just search “slam poetry” or “def poetry” on youtube and listen to some of the performances. I’ll be biased and say I much prefer slam poetry to def poetry though. A warning: slam poetry can get highly addicting, no joke. However, I can give you some more specific recs if you’re interested.

OTOH, just throwing it out there, I nurse some rather sore spots for Emily Dickinson and John Donne. Let’s just Dickinson’s I felt a funeral in my brain is a good description of how I feel when I read most of their poems. :(

I’ve been a little obsessed with Keats lately, after I saw this great movie by Jane Campion called “Bright Star”. Cried a lot, read the title poem a lot.

Other than that, I’m not too much into poetry. I have no patience for it. I do like Walt Whitman though. His poems have such a lively tempo.

I recently read the best poem ever:

Mr. Stone never talks while rolling down the middle
of the road. In the stream, he will sing a little.

Was that ingenious or not?

Poetry is worthless. Instead of just outright saying something, a poet has to obfuscate everything to the point where people have to make educated guesses on what his writings mean. And somehow this obscure, unreadable, chicken scratch becomes known as an intelligent piece of literature. It’s beyond me… Sometimes I wonder if society is screwed up.

cjgone is worthless. Instead of just outright telling everyone in real life his ridiculous notion that a great art form is “worthless”, he has to post anonymously to the point where people have to make educated guesses on who this gigantic idiot of an unlearned kid he is and why he has to hide himself behind a computer screen. And somehow this uncultured, Republican, hipster hating buffoon has posted over 500 times without being banned for ■■■■■■■■. It’s beyond me…Sometimes I wonder if cjgone has any friends.

nope, no one.

WOW, now that’s what I like to read babyyy!!

Check out different poets. Maybe you don’t like the ones you read in school most of the time. EE Cummings is often read in schools, but he’s a lot different from the typical poet. Like, here’s something he wrote:

l(a

le
af

fa
ll
s)

one

Aren’t you doing the same thing though?

William Carlos Williams is way cooler than cummings, and easier to understand. Try Andrew Marvell and John Keats/William Wordsworth for a good smattering

Nice observation, Captain No F.ucking S.hit Obvious.

I don’t even like regular English poetry…

So much lol. e.e. cummings is definitely my favorite - his poetry is just so crazy. Edgar Allan Poe, John Keats and Lewis Carroll are also up there, as well as a couple of lesser-known poets.

Let’s suggest poems that are fun for a first read, and not deep and depressive. I’ll start.

she being Brand - e.e. cummings
Jabberwocky - Lewis Carroll

William Carlos Williams > ee cummings because he has a cooler name. just sayin’ lol
I’d definitely start there. It’s not as tough as some poetry (Pound’s Cantos cough cough), but still pretty well written (shel silverstein cough cough)

you know what’s really intriguing and inspiring?

CALCULUS AND DIFFERENTIAL EQNSS!!

What does being Republican have to do with anything?

You’re really kewl bro, look at you go!
