Does anyone ever get rejected/waitlisted after getting a likely letter?

I know for fact that selective schools send out likely letters to extremely qualified applicants in order to entice them

Does that mean you are essentially in?
Have anyone seen a case where someone got rejected or waitlisted after receiving a likely mail??

only if they do something really stupid like murder their parents or fail all their classes. Otherwise, no.

It's been 30 years, but I knew a guy at Cornell who had received a "likely" letter from Princeton, his first choice, then received another letter saying the first was a mistake, that he was actually a "high probable." I believe he was waitlisted, then ultimately rejected.

I knew someone else who had received an "unlikely" letter at Yale, but was ultimately accepted. (He was a 8-generation legacy; that may have made the difference.)
