that a lot of people are applying to columbia just because it can call itself Ivy? I mean...for me...at least...I would prefer columbia not be an ivy...because it would be a h*ll of a lot easier for me to get into if it weren't...I just love Columbia because of it's awesome Core and it's cool 3-2 Engineering School + Columbia College Program..and so many people are just like "I hate the core but it's an ivy and it's in NYC so I'LL APPLY!!!" and it just makes me angry.

Yeah, the people that are just applying because it is an Ivy should shove off and go somewhere else. Columbia's name is not known that well at all, most of the time when I tell people i am applying to Columbia they do not even know it is an Ivy. I had to prove it to one of my freinds... Those kinds of people should just go for Harvard, Yale or Princeton.

Sorry for the ranting, I just had to say it.

thicks...I agree with you on how Columbia's name is not well known. I once heard a guy saying that it was funny that Columbia put "Ivy League" on a letter just so people would apply, even though Columbia is not in the Ivy League (that's what he thought).

I corrected him immediately. Really, who thinks of something like that?

being the only Ivy in New York City does have its attractions.

From what I've seen on these boards, and what I've heard in all, I think the ppl applying ED to Columbia have generally taken more time to actually get to know the school. I think in general we are applying because we love the school, not its Ivy prestige. The name/prestige-driven ppl tend to apply early to HYP. But of course, there are always exceptions :).

And yes, I agree with you guys on Columbia's fame (or lack thereof). People here in Canada confuse Columbia with the country Colombia-- "You want to go that far for school?...It must be for the drugs". :S

^-- lol...

oh i wish COlumbia was not an ivy either! If it wasn't an Ivy, I would love it just the same, trust me. And it sucks because all the kids in my school apply to Columbia because it's an NYC Ivy and they are very competitive applicants as well........bah

Responding to the question, "Why Columbia?" with a "cuz its an ivy in NYC!" will make them non-competitive. No biggie.

i think most of them are intelligent enough to know that that isn't the correct answer lol ;)

no but really...there are so many people at my school who are EDing it to Princeton, but if they don't get in, their first plan is to apply to Columbia, Harvard, Yale, Penn, etc. It's like, So...you don't give a ***** about what is really going on, you just want the name? Why is that? Why are people like that? It just makes me disappointed, having nothing to do with competition ..

i agree with you insntynonchalan (wow that took some effort to type lol)

And what really sucks is that those people actually end up at their "good name school" whether it be an Ivy or Stanford/DUke etc etc....

and the nice guy finishes last =(

"Why is that? Why are people like that?"

haha, I guess many of those people have no idea what they want to with their life that they just want to apply to all the top colleges and go from there.

it's sad, really. But I think the adcom is not that stupid, they can tell.

I agree...................................

Many people do it because it gives you a good name and a good platform for future success, which is a plausible reason I think. I visited several campuses and they are frankly pretty similar to me, I don't understand how people can visit a place and "just feel at home." If all of you honestly believe that you didn't apply to Columbia at least partially for its prestige then you are kidding yourselves. Everyone hear has relatively high test scores; everyone automatically restricts themselves simply by choosing the schools they will apply to or vist--doesn't every school you guys are looking at have academic standards at least somewhere near your abilities, be it a match, safety, or reach? If you are not applying anywhere because of its prestige, wouldn't you be looking at drastically different (academically speaking) schools also? Just because someone wants to go the best school possible for him/her academically does not make that person evil.

Roanoke College. You heard of it? I don't think so. That's somewhere that I'm applying and seriouslyconsidering going if I don't get into columbia. Don't tell me what I think.

well...i applied to columbia, i said it did feel like home but that was because, I have friends there, my best friend lives in Lincoln Center so I grew up hanging out in the city, i volunteer in Central Park...it really is like my 2nd home

Well i stand corrected then. BUt I still maintain that it is wishful thinking for people to say that prestige is a total nonfactor.

of course prestige is a factor.
or else nyu would just be as good.

"If all of you honestly believe that you didn't apply to Columbia at least partially for its prestige then you are kidding yourselves."

Of course, most of us have to admit that in some way, subconsciously we like to be admitted to Columbia for it's ivy affiliation.

daniyal555, I think you misunderstood me. WANTING to go to a top school isn't "evil" at all. It's the students who don't know what they want and JUST want an ivy that ticks me off a bit.

"Just because someone wants to go the best school possible for him/her academically does not make that person evil."

Hmm...I don't think you should apply to an ivy just because it is an ivy, i'm sure everyone have people around them that does that.

damn...typed too long, missed previous two posts, sorry.

funny how when I visted there... every signle person I met told me, "You think the core is great until you have to go through it. You'll hate it afterwards. Everyone does"... maybe I met the wrong people... but I doubt it

"You think the core is great until you have to go through it. You'll hate it afterwards. Everyone does"

Hey, but you never will know how bad it is until you go through with it huh? And by that time it'll be too late.

:)
