Like, in my old high school, which is pretty socioeconomically advantaged, pretty much NO ONE pursued programming for fun. No one really did PHP, Perl, C++, Java, etc... outside of one's programming class. This I found interesting, perhaps since computer science careers are thought to be one of the most common white-collar careers in these days.

What about your school?

It's actually pretty amazing how many people are good in math and don't know anything about programming. That being said, they can pick it up very fast once they get used to it.

On the other hand, I was never socialized within my high school, so I may have just been ignorant.

If my statement has some merit to it with respect to other high schools, I suppose that could be one reason why the US Computing Olympiad isn't particularly popular (compared to the other olympiads).

And has anyone at your school actually set up forums of their own? And programmed them? (not just by using Ezboard/Invisionfree/etc). Actually though, someone at my school did set up forums, though I'm unsure whether she actually programmed them or merely used an easy-to-set-up board
