Does anyone know a rough estimate of the acceptance rate for out-of-state engineers into Mich?

I’m just curious if anyone has an idea of what it could be.

There is no data available. However, we know the OOS yield rate is in the low 20% and the in state yield rate is near 70%. Assuming the ratio of in state to OOS applicant to CoE is the same as UMich overall at 1:4, and the estimated 15000 total applicants for CoE with a ~20% admission rate (~3000 will be admitted) as last year. There would be 12000 applicants from OOS and 3000 from in state. If the 1250 enrolled freshmen in CoE also has the same 60:40 ratio of in state to OOS student as UMich overall, there would be 500 OOS and 750 in state enrolled. Now take 25% yield rate for OOS (was 22-23% before when the overall yield rate was 40%), then they need to admit 2000 OOS students in order to get 500 enrolled. So 2000 out of 12000 would be 16.7% admission rate for OOS. While for in state students, they just need to admit 1071 students to have the 750 in state students enrolled (~70% yield rate). So the admission rate for in state student would be around 30%.

Here are some CoE admission and enrollment stat from 2014 (2013):

New Undergraduate Applicants
A. Number of undergraduate applicants to the engineering college: 12,607 (11,171)
B. Of those in (A), how many were offered admission? 3,489 (3,333)
C. Of those in (B), how many were enrolled in the fall? 1,318 (1,247)
Percentage of entering students (excluding transfer students) ranked in the top quarter (25%) of their high schools: 100% (96%)

Enrolled Freshmen Stat (Admission stat would be higher):
Scores Reflect 75th to 25th percentile
SAT 75th - 25th
Math Range: 790 - 710 (780 - 700)
Reading Range: 730 - 630 (720 - 620)
Writing Range: 730 - 630 (730 - 630)
Combined Range: 2210 - 2020 (2200 - 1980)
ACT 75th - 25th
Math Range: 35 - 31 (35 - 32)
Composite Range: 34 - 31 (33 - 30)

The admission mid 50 ACT was 31-34 in 2012 & 2013 when the enrolled freshmen mid 50 was 30-33. Last year, the median admission ACT was 33 and the mid 50 should be around 32-34+ as the enrolled mid 50 was 31-34.
I am expecting the applicant pool size to be around 15000 this year. Note that it was only 8702 in 2012 but jump up 2469 in 2013 then another 1436 in 2014. I would not be surprised at all to see it jump up another 2400 this year.

@billcsho‌ Cool, thanks! they’ll probably release more data after the RD are done

Jimboboy, unfortunately, Michigan does not break down admissions data based on resident status.

@billcsho‌ just out of curiosity, where did u find the college of engineering specific statistics for last year

@Jimboboy Here is the site: http://profiles.asee.org/profiles/6621/screen/19?school_name=University+of+Michigan
Browse through the links on the left for additional information. They do have enrollment numbers by races and gender too.
