We are going to Boston 10/23 weekend. We are seeing Emmanuel, BU, and Emerson and perhaps a stop at Providence College if we can fit it in.

I had never heard of Emmanuel............but they give good merit aid to qualified students.

Can anyone inform us of the ranking and feel of the school? Location looks good in the College Fenway area..........but don't know anything except what we read on the website.

Any info on the other schools mentioned above or any other Boston colleges for a top student who's family has a modest budget w/o the help of financial aid( we won't qualify for much) would be great! Thanks

I toured Emerson a year ago with my daughter, my friend, and her son. My friend's son is a freshman there now and doing great so far. My daughter was very impressed with the school but decided not to apply because she felt it was too focussed and she wanted more of what she referred to as a "normal" (I read this as liberal arts based) experience. It was a great tour, and I am sure you will enjoy learning about the school. I know they give merit aid - I think it's a separate application and/or essay for this program.

I don't really know anything at all about Emmanuel College. I live about 10 miles outside the city and kids from our area seem to focus on Suffolk rather than some of the other smaller Boston schools. Northeastern is also very popular, but it is getting much harder to get into these days.

BU tends to be very generous with merit aid, though even 1/2 tuition is going to leave you with a relatively large bill. The freshman dorms are not supposed to be too good, but some of the new upperclassmen dorms are great.

Try to make the trip down to Providence College. Providence is a great city. The school is a medium size and seems to attract many of the kids who would have gone to BC before it got so hard to get into. My daughter has a few friends there and they are all enjoying it. I believe your PC id card gets you free access to public buses throughout Rhode Island. One potential drawback is a required humanities course that meets every day for two years. If you like the class, great. If not...

I toured all of those schools. Emmanuel wasn't my favorite. It just somehow seemed to need updating. My mom felt like it had a catholic girls school feel to it. If youre looking for a full ride try Suffolk, we all loved it. The location can't be beat, right across the common from Emerson on Beacon Hill. Very charming for an urban school.Dorms are the nicest I've ever seen. The admission staff at our info tour were warm and friendly and the kids were great. It wasn't even on my radar but some friends from my high school are going now and love it. Honors program is very challenging. I'll be applying there as well as Emerson, BU and Northeastern.

Nearby are Clark, Wheaton, and (....care to join me, Par72?...) Holy Cross. These are all very good options for your D in the same area you are visiting.
