Does anyone know anything about Northeastern and multimedia studies?

I was noticing that Northeastern Unversity has a multimedia studies program which is a combination of art and music. Does anyone know anything about the program and any co-ops that they may offer?

A student of mine has been accepted to Northeastern and is visiting there today. She posts on this web site. I'll ask her when she returns if she has any knowledge that can be of help to you.

taxguy, First thanks for taking time to post all of your reports about the various schools you have visited. We (my s and I) have read through most of them and they are so informative. My s happened upon another school, UNC Asheville that offers a multimedia degree. Have you or your daughter looked into it? On paper (and on their website) it looks interesting. You have done so much research into schools along the East Coast, I was just curious if you have heard about it. (I posted this ? on the board the other day, but haven't had any replies- sorry for the repetition if you already saw it! :))

No, I haven't checked it ou; I will now. However, there is something that bothers me about my daughter going to school in Asheville, NC, which is Jesse Helms territory.

Darn, my editing time expired. Actually, North Carolina State University has a better reputation in art and design. I will be checking them out but have the same reservation about my daughter attending a school in North Carolina. Maybe its my NY background. She might do fine there being a southern girl herself.

Also, when we looked at NC State, the tuition for out of state folks was a whopping $25,500 per year! This is every bit as high as many private schools.

Also NC State, on a cursory review, seemed to have a lot of core requriements such as 2 science courses, 2 math courses, a foreign language etc. I personally don't think she wants a school with lots of core requirements, and personally I agree with her, with the exception of English. This seems to be true for other North Carolina State schools.

Oh come on now you strike me as a NY kind of guy. I'm sure you passed on some of these traits to your D as well. Send her up here we would love to have her!!!

Cama

Taxxguy is your d interested in the Com Des program at Pratt that we were talking about on the other post? I thought she was interested in New Media/ Grapic Design?

Cama, yes, she might well be interested in Comm Design at Pratt. Right now though, she is leaning on not going to a stand alone art school. She wants to associate with other types of people too and not just artsy types. However, we will be looking at Pratt with her. I feel that she would like it there, because she would love to be near New York City, but this is going to be her call.

For what its worth, I was very impressed with Pratt's Communication Design department and facilities. We spoke to many kids at that department, and they all raved about it.

Yes I feel that it is absolutely imperative to get the student involved with the decision. And sometimes they just have the "feeling" when they walk onto the campus. After I took my D to her portfolio review at Parsons she said she didn't want to go there because she didn't like the attitudes of the people (whatever that meant). I thought it was a great school. When she visited Pratt said this is where I want to be, why because she "liked the people and it made her feel good." Really wanted her to apply to RISD and Syracuse but she wouldn't hear of it only wanted NYC. Go figure... As long as we felt comfortable with her choice we weren't going to push the issue, too many other issues to debate with an 18 yr old. Anyway D will be staring the CommDesign major at Pratt this Fall so if you have any specific questions when you get to that point just ask.

For what it is worth, My D is not really that much of an "artsy" type of kid in the sense that she is not into grunge and likes to shop, shop, shop especially at stores in the city. Most of her friends from are regular kids with the same values. I haven't seen any "purple hair kids" in her circle of friends

Funny, we looked into North Carolina State also. They offer a summer program for design students. My d didn't want to go that far south - now all her friends are giving her grief for choosing Northern NY (cold). I think the NC entrance requirements (SATs, etc) are actually higher for design students than for other types of majors.

We also went to Northeastern for an Open House. My d had wanted a Boston school and didn't like BU's lack of campus. Soston College didn't offer her major. Northeastern was very disorganized the day we attended. We never did find the art dept (not on the official tour and school officials sent us to the wrong location 2 different times). We found art prof offices but not studio space. My d asked the art dept representative (a prof supposedly in the art dept) if she would receive credit for her Art History AP class (what score did she need on the exam?) and the teacher said he didn't know. No one had ever asked that before. WHat? Something was definitely off that day... I'd like to hear if someone had a good experience. Maybe we had a "fill in" person or something. Just didn't click for my d.

So Jerzgrlmom,
Where did your D end up?

Cama

Well technically no where yet. After all, she says the acceptance letter doesn't have to be postmarked until tomorrow/Sunday. HELP!!! She drives me crazy. She does everything last minute. Last night we were at a HS mtg and I heard her respond to someone "probably RIT." I'd say that's progress.

I want it to be her decision and I'm sad that SU chose now to make changes. I just think she doesn't want to deal with the hassle of SU's move downtown. If we had a year to see how it turns out, that would be different. My d's always been the type of kid to stand back and observe for a while before participating. She feels very comfortable at RIT, mostly due to the administration and the design students she has met. She was offered scholarships to both schools so that's not a big issue.

She knows a few kids that are pressuring her to go to James Madison U in VA. She'd probably have a lot more "fun" there, esp with them. So, I'm waiting to see how she prioritizes things. I'll post on Saturday night where the acceptance letter was sent.

Jerzgrlmom, Yes keep us informed as I feel we are all in this together.

I feel like I'm going crazy so I can only imagine how our children feel. Mine is still trying to make up all the research papers, tests and art projects from when she was out with mono. This should be a fun time for her but it's not... On top of that, I just realized today is the last day to register for the June SATs. My son (sophomore) wants to take the Bio SATII since he's finishing up BIO AP now (AP exam is May 9). Can't believe we're starting this process all over again... Sure was easier when all we had to do was worry if they ate, slept and pooped. Anyone remember that first year?

Ok, acceptance is in and deposit was paid online this morning. She's going to RIT. We'll see how the social aspect and cold work out. She applied to live in the Art House, but that's not guaranteed - otherwise, she can be placed anywhere on campus.

Jerzgrlmom, congrats. I heard RIT has awesome programs. However, in the event that the school isn't right for her, she can always transfer. After your daughter is there for 6 months to a year, we would love to hear her impressions.
