Recently got accepted to Whittier college with a good amount of scholarship! The problem is, don’t know too much about it. Does anyone have any input re Whittier???
Curious as well
Whittier has a reputation as an excellent school. Small, with personalized attention from engaged professors. Strong academics.
Whittier is one of the oldest colleges in southern California, and the only one to produce a US President (although it was Nixon). Located by the hills near the LA/Orange County line; this means that it is too far east to be in the cool parts of LA, and too far northwest to be in the cool parts of OC. The name recognition probably suffers because of the relatively out-of-the-way location. However, the last time that I was in Whittier (maybe five years ago), the campus struck me as attractive. It’s between Uptown Whittier, which seemed like a nice commercial and residential area, and undeveloped hills.
The college is not as selective or wealthy as other SoCal LACs (Claremonts, Oxy), but has a reputation for good teaching. Unusually high levels of ethnic and economic diversity in student body, compared to most private LACs. Goofy mascot.
A friend of ours has a kid there who has been very happy with the teaching and general level of support. It seems to have a very accepting, inclusive vibe, so for her kid, no social woes.
Thanks!!!
