I am currently registered for Sociology 101 for summer school at a community college. I checked on Assist and saw that Sociology is a GE for UC's. I'm just making sure it is. For those of you that have taken Sociology before, how was it? Is it hard? What is it about? Thanks!

In my opinion, sociology is fairly boring and does little more than point out the obvious: “Poor people are poor. Why are they poor? Because they have no money.”

haha really? That’s what Sociology is about? I don’t think so. You didn’t answer my question though. Is Sociology a GE for UC’s?

“Poor people are poor. Why are they poor? Because they have no money.”

^ Don’t know what sociology classes you’ve been taking. There is a lot more out there.

Intro to Socio will cover a lot more things like who started it, types of sociology, experiments, research and then you will start breaking into more specific topics like aggression, genders, relationships, child development etc etc. In my opinion there is a lot of reading - especially if your prof supplements the textbook with novels.

I personally find it kinda boring because it’s so broad. To me sociology doesnt get really interesting until you take a class that has a very specific topic like ‘capital punishment’ or ‘life and death decisions’.

I’m taking intro online right now and have taken sociology in more specific forms at my university as well as social psychology.

ok thanks for providing a description of Sociology class. However, you still haven’t answer my main question. Is Sociology a GE for UC’s?

someone please answer my question…

It will very likely fulfill a breadth requirement, if that’s what you mean by GE.

Sorry, I don’t know, however it might be better to post this in the University of California General section over in the Colleges and Universities subforum.

ok thanks!

It does…

It does what?

It will definitely fill a social science requirement at any UC or CSU.

oh that’s good! Thank you :)
