Hey everyone, I'm a junior in NY and I really want to go to nyu because my friends are all going there. I'm probably going to apply to stern. I'm an asian who gained citizenship about 7 years ago (I know, no effect). I really want to go there because 1. I live in NY and 2. My sister went there and got a lot of financial aid. I think she got in with a 96 or 97 average which is around a 4.0 on a 4 scale.

-3.75 Weighted average (thats around a 93)
-I have a 2080 sat (math is 670, reading is 710, and writing is 700)
-expecting to get 700 in us history and 650 in biology (just took the 2s yesterday).
-I took honor class throughout highschool except for math (I took the regular course). I took 2 ap classes this year and I'm expect to take 5 next year.
-Member of the business honor society
-joined track, but was injured because my knee was busted
-French Club (Secretary)
-interact club (vp)
-DECA (official NY business club)
-Ambassadors club

What are my chances of getting into NYU stern? Thx

You haven't taken MAth IIC yet? Honestly, the math courses you took in HS might hurt you. After all, you're applying to a business school. However, your reading/writing SAT scores are quite nice. Do you have any special awards? How much community service have you done?

If that's what your going to have at the time of application, I'd recommend applying ED to increase your chances. Your scores are good enough to make me think that you'd get in, but not high enough for people to say you have an almost 100% guarantee. I'd suggest taking SATs again and see if you can bump the math a little higher.

Also....ur sister got a lot of financial aid?? FROM NYU!??!?! ......I have no idea how that worked out. Don't count on much aid though. NYU's infamous in being stingy. I found it sorta dissapointing that a NYU, a school of what...20,000? has the same endowment as a school of 800 (caltech). We need more alumni who donate

Thx for the fast reply, my sister applied to CAS not on ED. I believe she ONLY has to pay about $3,000 (only for room and board?) for all 4 years. Yes she only has to pay 3k. I think she also browse this board from time to time getting info on orientation and stuff. I'm not good in math, so I'll probably get like a 600-650 on the mathIIC. If I get like 2100 on the sats and ed nyu, how will my chances change? Will it be like 50/50 of me getting in? And I also did community service like senior citizen prom and tons of service for interact. I will probably also volunteer in a hospital over the summer. I also took humanities 9th, 10, 11, which is way harder then honors english or history. I also speak 4 languages mandrin, another chinese lanugage, english, and french. I'm also microsoft certified in word and excel. My award ceromony won't be until next year so I have no idea. THX

Then stern may not be good for you... Buisness programs rely heavily on math and analytical thinking. Low math scores may keep you out of stern.

I don't know so much about that...most people go to business school to get out of math. You really don't need that much math unless you're going into accounting or actuarial science/statistics. After all, Stern only requires calc I and stat.

Its not that I'm not good in math, I'm just not great at it. I'm sure if I actually study hard I would've been in honors math and I've done better on the sat if I study all 3 years.

sorry, but you have some really dumb reasons for wanting to go to nyu.

-a lot of your friends are going there
* for starters, you can't know this yet. maybe they will apply, but doesn't mean they'll get in.
* this is NEVER a good reason to choose a school. choose a school for you, not for your friends.

-your sister gets lots of financial aid from them
*please realize that this is HARDLY the norm. if she is getting lots of aid, I would assume it's combined merit and need-based. so yes, you should get around the same need-based as her, but your academic stats are average for nyu whereas it seems hers were a bit higher. don't EVER count on fin aid from NYU

And the math thing, I believe, will hurt you. I would assume that most of the people applying to stern will have been in honors math classes and taken the math 2 sat. Heck, I'm gonna be in Tisch and even I've taken the math 2 sat. Most people have (at least most everyone I know...and I go to a rather generic high school). It will stand out that you've taken all the honors courses EXCEPT math, yet you are applying to stern.

Now, I'm not saying you won't get in. Fact is, I think you have a decent enough chance as anyone. But make sure NYU is where you want to go, because it's NOT a typical school and if you don't get that financial aid you're counting on (which quite frankly I don't think you will, because almost everyone doesn't) it's way expensive. And remember, ED is binding unless they put you into GSP.

As many have said, the math will hurt you. Friends I know who are going to stern are unbelievable geniuses. Math is no problem for them. =S

I got into Gallatin, and here's my stats if that helps any.
3.9 uw
Math: 720 Verbal: 760 Writing: 760
A whole slew of ec's, officers, community service, NHS, Tri-M, Chinese Honor Society, blahblah.
The thing that may be different is that I attend an American school overseas, so I get the diversity thing. But then I'm Asian too, but hey, NYU has its large share of Asians.

I'd recommend another school for you. =) Oh, I got financial aid too, merit based, a whole $4000. Wow... haha. =P
