Does anyone know of colleges that offer a degree in mythology?

Hey peoples!

I'm looking for any college or university that offers a degree in mythology. I've been searching on the internet, but that has been pretty fruitless so far. So if anyone knows of a college that has mythology it would be great if you told me about it. Thank you so so so much!!

You can take a lot of courses that cover mythology extensively at most big schools, usually from the perspective of various formal disciplines like religion, anthropology, comparative literature, classics, and psychology (particularly if they happen to have a Jungian in the department).

I've never heard of a formal major in the subject, but some schools allow you to put together your own major. A big school that has this option might very well approve a carefully chosen interdisciplinary series of courses on mythology in satisfaction of the major requirement.

Do you know which colleges would be the best to contact?

Mythology is very loose and broad. There is ancient mythology and, now, urban mythology (usually in the sociology dept, I think), and as the poster above referenced, many others. I fondly recall a class in Archetypal Literature that was taught in the Philosophy dept.

Indiana University -Bloomington has a mythology studies department at the graduate level. You might contact them directly and ask about (1) undergrad opportunities at IU in mythology and (2) their recommendations of other programs or related programs at the undergrad level. Here's the link:

Looks like they also have an undergrad folklore major plus a Classics major where you can concentrate on literature and art. Also seems like it would be very possible to do an independent major in the school of arts & sciences combining course work from folklore, classics, comp. literature, and perhaps classes related to mythological traditions in Asia, Africa, etc.

I know a guy who did Folklore Studies at Brown, but he might have designed that himself.

I do not believe a college offers a degree in such a narrow field, but if you are qualified you might want to take a look the Classics Dept. at Princeton.
It has a fantastic department and a wide selection of courses in classical studies.

On the Simpsons, Comic Book Guy has a degree in mythology from Harvard...not the most reliable source obviously, but maybe worth looking into?

Harvard offers an undergraduate degree in folklore and mythology: http://fas-www.harvard.edu/~folkmyth/

U.C. Berkeley and the U. of Oregon have masters degree programs in folklore.

Edith Hamilton was at Bryn Mawr.

Look at University of Chicago. The main page has an interesting article about a woman who is expert in Hindi mythology who has been teaching there for some time.

Speaking of mythology, Age of Mythology is a fun game. If you go to Harvard and get a degree in mythology, you should collaborate with a game designer and make an Age of Mythology 2 and you'll make millions of dollars, I bet.
Jeez, I hope a moderator doesn't think I'm selling something...

Penn has a degree program in Folklore. Also, ome schools, I think BU and Tufts for example, allow you to independently create a program/major.

As far as getting a degree in mythology, Harvard really does offer degrees in both folklore and mythology. You could also try researching American Studies as your major and just focus on mythology. More colleges are likely to offer a degree in that so it will open up your options.

This is very old but I know that there is a lot of people still looking for this kind of info. So here is a link that shows folklore. I know it isn’t mythology but most majors usually include mythology as well. http://www.afsnet.org/?page=WhereToStudyFolklore
