I have been admitted to RIT for computer engineering and I would like to do the dual degree program and graduate in 5 years with a masters and a bachelors degree. To apply for this, at least for comp eng, you need a 3.4 GPA at the end of sophomore year. I was just wondering if anyone knew what the average GPA of students, specifically comp eng, is and/or how hard it is to keep a 3.4 GPA at RIT.
Thanks

It’s hard because the grading system at RIT. RIT does not have A-, B+, B-, or C+, etc.

So how do they grade then?

100-90 = A, 80-89 = B, 79-70 = C, etc

The word is that it is easy to get in to RIT and tough to stay, especially in engineering programs. I know there are kids with great gpa’s above 3.5 in engineering. My kid isn’t one of them. He is SE. Had a 3.8 in hs and a 32 on the ACT. It was a big adjustment his 1st year to all the work and some of the teachers the freshmen get are not the greatest. If you survive the first year, it gets a LOT better when you can pick your own profs and you get the lay of the land. RIT doesn’t count any classes taken outside of the university into your gpa, either. So, although my son got all A’s (maybe one B, can’t remember entirely) for classes taken during the summer and while in hs, only the RIT gpa counts toward scholarships, etc.

I have one son at RIT and another on his way. I think the older one said they are changing the grading to include pluses and minuses.

I think that any engineering program is challenging. My younger son is going into ME and also plans on the dual program if he qualifies.

RIT has lots of help on campus for academics - more than the average engineering college. They are definitely not one of the sink or swim programs but you do have to put in the work.
