The financial aid site encourages us to do so, but does it actually work? Johns Hopkins is giving me $4000 more in need-based aid than Brown is (a very large amount for my family) and I would really like to go to Brown…I’m submitting JHU’s award letter tomorrow when I get home, but does anyone know what my chances of actually getting more money are?
From what I’ve heard here, chances are good when it’s a “peer school” of Brown, which Johns Hopkins should be. The thing to look for is whether you’re getting any merit-based scholarships, since Brown won’t match those. Definitely worth trying! If you’re currently at ADOCH, you may want to try to talk to a financial aid officer in person if possible.
DD submitted another need base financial aid school offer and got 20K more in 12 hours after submission.
@bruno14 I did, so thank you for the suggestion. She told me there was a very good chance that it’ll work, so I’ll be submitting tomorrow. The aid from JHU is a need-based scholarship, so hopefully it’ll actually turn out.
@HappyDad2112 Could you tell me how you did the submission. Did you fill out their long appeal form? Where and to whom did you submit the other need base financial aid offer? My student is in the same boat as @hufflepuffle JHU’s award is better than Brown’s and any amount is significant for my student.
Getting 20K more is wonderful, congratulations.
@itsv DD uploaded the other school’s offer in PDF format and sent an e-mail describing situation to financial office.
Dude I was in the same position as you. Johns Hopkins offered 5k more due to a merit award and brown ended up matching so it should work.

@hufflepuffle Did you ever hear back from Brown and whether they would match your JHU award?
@itsv Yeah, I didn’t get any more money unfortunately. Still committed, though.
@hufflepuffle My student didn’t get any more money either which is really too bad considering Brown’s endowment (and I work with very low-income students). My student is not going to Brown and instead a third school that came in with better financial aid than Brown, but not as good as JHU. Good luck to you at Brown. My son’s best friend graduated from there last year and loved it.
