Does appearance matter?

Hello all! I was just wondering what do you guys think about appearances as far as talking to admission and financial aid people? Also, what about for school overnights?

I'm going to go talk to a financial aid rep, and obviously I'm not going to go in sweats, but I've seen other people look like they roll ou of bed, I just wanted to hear parents opinions.

Also, is it ok to wear anything to a school overnight program?

Wear your best jeans etc at the very least. Look nice. Yes look nice casual for the admissions people if not a pair of back pants. Do not have to look like you are going to a wedding but it depends on the region how you would dress.

Why wouldn’t you want to look nice? Clean, neat, goes without saying.
I’d suggest nicer pants or a skirt for the interview, and take jeans for the overnight.

I would specifically suggest NOT looking like you’re going to a wedding. That would be incredibly weird.

I do what I like to call “lazy dress” for situations like this. Jeans, sneakers, a dress shirt top button unbuttoned, and a sport coat. Seems to suffice. For this it may really be overkill even, but if you’d prefer to over dress than under dress for this, that may be a way to go.

These aren’t interviews, they are mainly for you to ask for more financial aid, correct. Look presentable. I nice pair of pants/jeans and a nice top with a scarf would be fine. A skirt or pantsuit would be overkill.

Vladenschlutte–she would look kind of silly in that outfit :D.

At one of my former jobs, a fellow employee went to our boss to complain about her salary and request a raise. She wore a fur coat to work and could literally go months without repeating an outfit. I’d never seen a wardrobe like hers. For some reason she was unsuccessful in her appeal. So yes, appearance can matter!

Meh. Girl’s dress is too complicated.

I’d do basic college wear - decent pair of jeans, button down shirt tucked in with belt, blazer or cardigan and a pair of sperrys or ballet flats.

^This is not basic college wear everywhere (for instance, my son would never wear a button-down shirt and I haven’t seen many at his college). I would take your cues from the current students you see around the particular campus you are visiting.

Jeans and a not ripped t-shirt. No need to overthink it.

Be prepared for the fact that you will most likely be camping out on someone’s floor. Bring a sleeping bag and pillow. As far as what to bring; less is definitely more. If you cannot fit it in an overnight bag, you don’t not need it. Now is not the time for flossing- leave your really expensive items and electronics home as it is not your room and you will not be there most of the time. Keep it simple; jeans tops maybe a simple dress and shoes, if there are any evening events for you. Bring a simple thank you gift for your host.

" Vladenschlutte–she would look kind of silly in that outfit "

I don’t know about that, Ellen pulls off that look daily on her show.

Short answer to your question: yes.

Like it or not, people judge you by the way you present yourself. Clean street clothes in good repair (i.e. not gym clothes or pajamas), clean body and brushed hair, and brushed teeth are the minimum requirements.

Interviews for admissions and financial aid are probably not the time to look like you just rolled out of bed. Save that for after you’re admitted and funded:)

I amend what I said in the earlier post. If you’re interviewing for admission, then you should dress nicely. I thought you just meant informal meetings.

I do admitted students days and I used to host overnight visits. Jeans and a clean, plain shirt are enough for those- including meeting with FA.

She has been admitted, this is just to talk to them to get more aid to attend.

If she’s already admitted the t-shirt can be ripped. :D

I dress like Ellen most of the time and so does my younger son, but I realize most girls would prefer something like a scoop necked t-shirt and that’s fine. Just be clean and reasonably neat.

I’m sorry, obv I mislead everyone lol. I know what I’m going to wear, I assumed jeans and a regular shirt would be fine; I guess I was wondering what you guys think of certain outfits. I’ve always been amazed how people can go to admissions and look like they rolled out of bed & then got hit by a bus. Thank you all for your answers!

Dressing nicely shows respect to those who are hosting you. You don’t need to go overboard, but do dress as though you put some thought into it and made some effort.

Check for the overnight about what social events you might be attending so you can dress appropriately.
