For top schools that offer EA, I've heard that applying EA doesn't really help your chances by much or at all. However, I was wondering if EA helps regular decision (i.e., would a person who applied EA and got deferred have a better chance than a person with similar credentials who applied regular).

No advantage or disadvantage, you start again in the RD pool of applicants.

I was wondering the same thing. And is there any disadvantage to applying for regular decision for other top schools if accepted for early action?

No problem with applying to schools RD after an EA acceptance since it’s not binding.
