does applying ED kill your financial aid?

I heard that some schools like Tufts don't give you much if you apply ED because they know they have you by the balls.

Is this true and do most schools (ivy's) not give as much aid to kids who get in ED as kids who get in RD?

they have to give you enough to meet your financial need. if the school WANTS you then you will get enough aid, but if you are applying ED because you don't have much of a chance RD, than good luck. I applied ED and i got a lot of aid.. 23,000 in grants/scholarships from the school

It's up to the schools what aid they give you and how that aid is configured. What happens when you apply ED is that you eliminate the ability to compare offers and to negotiate.

Even colleges that guarantee to meet 100% of demonstrated financial need have options about how they do this. They could, for instance, meet that need by giving you $20,000 a year in loans.

Also Ivies have been known to recalculate need when another college has provided more need-based aid.

Also, if one is a strong enough student to be considering Ivies, one would be able to get merit aid from some of the many colleges that give that kind of aid, which can be far in excess of one's financial need.

ITA with what Northstarmom is saying. If you are a stong enough student to be considering Ivies, you should definity hedge your bets with a variety of need based and Merit schools especially if money was an issue. There wil be a number of schools where you could get some great merit aid.

The Ivies state that they will give you an ED need based package that is comprable to the package you would get if applying RD.

As a family that needed to compare packages, D had to apply RD. Fortunately, she got into her first choice Dartmouth. She also got accepted to Williams which gave her a much more generous financial aid package.

Our Dartmouth financial aid package stated that you could request a financial review even if it means requesting sending an offer from another school. Daughter knew Dartmouth was her overwhelming first choice but Williams was the much more financially feasible option for our family. We told this to Dartmouth, and they met the Williams package. I thought that this would be a one time fluke to get her in the door, but we recently received FA package from Dartmouth for the second year which is pretty close to the revised package they gave us last year.

P.S. Daughter was also accepted the Tufts last year. They ended up giving her a pretty decent aid package (their package was a little better than the first Dartmouth package D received).
