Does applying for merit scholarships at Wash U hurt your chances of getting accepted RD?

So for all the masses who were waitlisted did you also apply for scholarships? I assume WU is “need” blind. It appears that a lot of those who have perhaps even less stats got in but also did not apply for any scholarships. So my question is does applying for scholarships actually hurt you in the end b/c they know you can not afford the school if you do not get a scholarship? I know of two situations where both students were in the top ten of their very large, very good high school, one had 36 ACT one had 34 ACT both with excellent EC’s and both were waitlisted. Just curious if anyone else waitlisted also applied for scholarships.

You are trying to rationalize why you were waitlisted.

exactly!! prob crazy talk I know Tom but just seems like a lot of those folks who were waitlisted applied for merit scholarships and those who were accepted did not apply for merit sch. Crazy thinking right? Just trying to convince myself that it makes no difference and they accept who they accept based on their own wisdom.

Son got accepted RD and applied for 2 scholarships which he did not get. only 5 percent or less get these scholarships. I think its the exact opposite that applying for scholarships shows demonstrated interest. Son also applied for FA another myth that you can’t get in RD and apply for FA. wash univ cares about demonstrated interest so have no idea if the top students you talked about getting wt listed if they showed any demonstrated interest. As far as applying for FA at this needs aware school, we were told by admissions officers that it only applied to kids when they are cherry picking kids off the wt list and does not factor into admission decisions in the ED or RD pool.

I am sure you are great and so sorry your wt listed. I am sure you will get into great schools and be happy but just didn’t want others reading this thread in the future have incorrect information.

Merit scholarships are not related to need. Applying for a merit scholarship does not necessarily mean you can’t afford the school, but if you qualify for the merit scholarship, even if your family could afford the school, why wouldn’t you apply and save some money? Merit scholarships are used to entice high-stat students by making the school more affordable. Applying for a merit scholarship should not have any negative effect on admissions (and in fact admissions may not even know about the scholarship application).

D accepted RD and applied for scholarship which she did not get. Given that there is no supplemental essay on the WUSTL application, we viewed the scholarship application as her only opportunity to talk in depth about the areas of study that she was likely to pursue.

I am mystified by why WUSTL needs to waitlist thousands if the most they have ever accepted recently was 150,

@texaspg It is a soft denial. A student can say “I almost got into WUStL/Duke/Yale etc.”

Do they actually waitlisted thousands of applicants? Why not reject more?

@tomsrofboston - I am not so sure students care unless they want to be admitted in which case they are being misled.

@herewelearn - Their FAQ says they have thousands on waitlist.

I don’t understand why they have to waitlist thousands applicant while they only admit maximum 150 from that waitlist. What is the purpose for this huge waitlist?

Here’s something I’m curious about in an attempt to answer @meowmeowwww’s very good question. Please correct me if my analysis is wrong.

WashU claims that in one year, they filled their class with 150 students from the waitlist. Let’s pretend they waitlisted 10,000 people and need 150 more students. So, WashU starts going off the waitlist. First, only 1/2 of the applicants will probably accept a position in the first place. Then, WashU asks person 1, who accepts. Then, they ask person 2, who may reject the offer. Person 3 declines. etc.

In other words, if WashU only waitlisted 150 kids, and if they needed to fill 150 places in the class this year, I highly doubt WashU would get 150––or even 50––of those students to attend.

^ WUSTL admits enough people that some years they don’t take anyone off the list. 150 was the maximum taken in recent years.

Anyone who is on waitlist is most likely interested or else they drop off the list. you have to say you want to be on it before May 2nd or else you are not on it.

I was accepted RD and applied for the Rodriguez scholarship but was not a finalist. I also applied for financial aid.

Does applying earlier help at all? I applied in December because I was done with the Common App. As far as I know, I am the only one that got in in my school even with moderately weaker stats.

I wouldn’t think so. I believe unless a school is ROLLING ADMISSION, which wash univ is not, they don’t start looking at applications until the deadline. Don’t sell yourself short. There are so many factors that go into the admission process at all schools and yes stats is important at a school like Wash Univ but not everything.

@momof2eagles Thank you. I was starting to think that maybe they accepted me because they needed someone to fill the bottom of the incoming class…
