Does applying to Honors Programs help with Financial Aid?

I was wondering if applying/getting in to colleges' honors programs had any effect on the financial aid they offer you.

Are you talking about need based aid? In most cases…no.

But if you have the stats to be eligible for the honors college, at some schools you might receive merit aid.

Yes, some colleges give additional merit aid for their honors college students. Some also have additional scholarships which those students can apply for and some of them do take into account financial need. So both merit and need based aid may be increased.

It depends upon the college and its rules. As SoMuch2Learn says, there are some additional pools of money for those who are accepted to honors college. Also some schools give the best aid to the best students. Admissions will rate those students accepted, and fin aid packages are put together according to whether you are a top choice or not. Can make the difference in getting full need met and grants, vs gaps and self help.

But for a lot of schools, admissions and fin aid are separate and it makes no difference.
