So here's the deal. I go to a VERY prestigious school on the east coast. I applied to transfer to a certain school on the west coast, and got rejected. I applied mainly because the school I go to doesn't have the academic program I wanted and thus I can't choose it as a major. I was totally expecting to get into said California school, since it's a MAJOR downgrade, on paper (although they have a great program for what I want to study). So basically, I got rejected, applying from a school with an acceptance rate of 10% by a place with an acceptance rate for transfers of 40%-50%. What the hell? My grades aren't horrible, my academic reasons are incredibly compelling, and I'm a unique applicant. Definitely enough to be considered. So I still want to go to this school, and I'm wondering if I should do the whole go-out-there-and-beg thing. I'm sure if I send an email or call they'll just say "sorry but our decisions are final," but if I go out and show up, show them how badly I want it and how I'm willing to do anything to go then they should let me in, if they have a willing ear, right? Has anyone had experience with this or know anyone who has?

Umm some schools actually have a appeal process. Maybe a reason why you were rejected from a school, you say is a lot lower acceptence standards is, I’ve been hearing due to the volume of apps these past years schools may reject applicants if they seem to to have standards higher than the school. Lots of people with very good grades are applying to more safety schools, as a result they may believe that you are applying to them as a safety and even if accepted you would not attend there. Rather than giving you an acceptence they do not believe you will fill, they will reject you to give the space to someone more likely to accept. Thats just a guess though, they may be other factors that I do not know.

Don’t know if begging has ever worked. Are you trying to go to USC’s film school?

If it’s an instate public, OOS transfer is rather difficult. Similar to transferring into the Ivies and such.

^^ Bourne is right. If you are applying to a California public university from the East Coast the 40-50% acceptance rate is deceiving. They have a very strong preference toward taking transfers from in-state universities and CCs (much more so than freshmen admissions).

Try appealing? If it is true that they denied you because they thought you were just applying there as a safety, maybe they’ll reconsider when they realize you’re willing to go through the appeals process just to attend their school. -shrugs- I suppose it couldn’t hurt.

No offense, but if you go and beg to them it will look pathetic, and they more than likely will not accept you. I say just go appeal, but I still wouldn’t count on anything as appeals rarely ever go through successfully.

Begging is never good. Presenting your case in a calm, rational manner can help.

I agree that if it’s a state school, your expectations weren’t the reality. They are extremely difficult to get into from out of state (they have to accept instate applicants first). Otherwise, try appealing. Let them know that you really want to go there, and weren’t just applying to their school as a safety.
