Does being 1 year behind in math kill my chances?

I am in Alg.1 as a freshman and my goal is to join a UC. I had all A's and B's but 1 bad grade in Alg. 1 last year because of some personal mistakes I made.

This year in the first semester I have a A+ in Algebra, but since I'm 1 year back, will that kill my chances of making it into a UC college? Will it help if I take courses at a local community college and leap ahead to where I should be?

They require 3 years of math. So if by your senior year, you have 3 years total of approved courses in math, you should be fine.

It will hurt you when you go to take the SAT/PSAT (you will be taking both without knowing all the math that is on it). Other then that it won’t effect anything…

Artsy… I think you’re quite mistaken…

There is absolutely no math on the SAT that you need anything beyond Geometry (10th grade?). Even if you take Geometry Junior year, take the SAT later in the year and once over the summer/October senior year and you’re fine.

No, the SAT has Algebra 2 on it. I have a friend who is encountering this problem right now (they are in Algebra 2 right now as a junior and are struggling with the math section because of this). It also means that you will not be able to take the ACT (which has pre-calc/trig on it).

Oh yes I forgot about Alg 2

Just take a math class over the summer, you’ll be perfectly fine.

And if you never get to take Alg 2. before the SAT, keep in mind that if you’re good enough at Alg 1, you can figure out how to do the Alg 2 questions without knowing specific rules.

I had to click Add 5 in my calculator about 230 times on my last SAT because I forgot arithmetic(?) sequences. It’s all still possible.
