Does being a walk-on help with admissions?

Hello everyone! I am a competitor in an individual sport. I recently spoke with a coach in one of the Ivies who told me that she was unsure of whether or not she will be able to offer me a "slot" on the team, but that she would love to have me on the team in the event that I am accepted to the school. My question is this: Can the coaches write a letter to the admissions officers saying that I will be an asset to their team, although they cannot offer me a slot? Is there any way that my sport could help me gain a leg up in the admissions process other than simply being "another extra curricular?" Thanks!

I think this is something you need to discuss with the coach. Some schools do recruit walk-ons and I think those athletes get some help with admissions. The extent to which your sport can help you with admissions will vary from school to school.

From what I understand, unless the coach at an Ivy backs you with a ‘slot’, aka likely letter, his general recommendation to admissions doesn’t carry much weight.

Thanks, that’s just what I was looking for. Any little bit helps when you’re competing against the best students in the nation! :)
