Does being class president look good on one's college applications?

I'm willing to take a lot of guts and try running for president in my school for the sake of the experience. I don't expect to win but I will try my hardest. I just want to make sure it doesn't prove detrimental towards my college apps.

Detrimental? I don't see how being class president could be detrimental, unless your GPA dropped 2 points, you drove the school into a ditch, and you had to stop all other extracurriculars...

i'm afraid admission officers would see it as a popularity contest

I think you're over-analyzing a bit...

In my opinion, unless you did what AiLove described, it'll either have no affect, or be a boost for you (assuming you actually did something with your leadership position).

Yes, you are definately over-analyzing. And why is it a bad thing to be popular? At least they know you're not a hermit..

I say go for it.

Don't run for Class President though if you're only doing it to improve your apps. I was good friends with the class president (and I was in ASB so I saw) and he would take a lot of heat for things that were not even in his control. Make sure it's something you really want to do!

Relax...go rent the movie "Election"

Being Class President is good, though it won't tip you in anywhere. It's rare when class elections are not simply popularity contests but that doesn't mean popularity is a bad thing. Run if you actually want to do the work- otherwise, don't.

Hmm, maybe this is just a Student Government person speaking, but I do think it can definitely be a positive thing. StuGo at my school is a major time commitment, and (as another poster said) we often get heat for stuff over which we had no control. Much of the school doesn't realize exactly what it is we do, but it is reflected in the number of hours we devote to it each week. If you have a positive influence on your school, then the position can't be anything but positive.

Perhaps elections can be sort of a popularity contest, but at my school the people who just want to be elected to validate their popularity quickly drop out because they realize how much work it is, and only those dedicated to it stay with it all the way through HS. You want a true popularity contest, get elected to Homecoming court. :)

do it, its a great resume booster
