State residency means whether or not you live in the state in which the college is situated. So for many public/state universities, for instance, the priority is to provide higher education for the citizens of that state, so whether or not an applicant lives in that state is highly important. This is why, for instance, it is much harder to get into Berkeley and UCLA as an out-of-state (non-California) applicant.

Pomona does consider geographic diversity, so being from an under-represented area might help a bit. However, I don't think Pennsylvania is necessarily under-represented. Think Wyoming - that's an under-represented area.

When I visited Pomona, they had a map in the admissions office with pins representing students stuck all over. I'm fuzzy on the exact number, but there were definitely not a lot of pins in PA. I agree that being from here will probably not help me much anywhere else, but (at least in my experience) no one around here has even heard of Pomona.....

^^I remember that map, too! There were plenty of applicants from Washington, so it won't help me too much. :) But being from the East Coast might, yes.

I wouldn't count on it doing much. Plenty of Pennsylvanians at Pomona. Chopsticks is right-- they're looking for (qualified) folks from ND or WY, because those are quite rare, but qualified PA applicants are not that rare.
