Does Being Gay Help?

Hi... I was wondering, does being "gay" add weight to a student's application at liberal schools like Stanford?

I'm not gay, but I'm wondering if it would help...

No, in and of it's self it does nothing. Showing "passion" towards gay political causes might help.

You're not gay now but by the time you apply your going to join The Alliance and start a chapter of PFLAG? Right.

Dude it's people who like you who ruin the whole academic system of the U.S. "I'm gay and I want to be accepted because I'm no different than you. but can it help me or someone get into college?" That's almost as bad as affirmative action. Rely on your academics.

guys its not like he said hes going to suddenly turn gay... he could just be wondering. no need to attack him for being curious..

Why, or better how, would being gay possibly help in admission?

that would be even worse than affermitive action, at least the other races are in a bad position because of previous racism putting the minorities in a perpetual system of poverty, typically gay people are first generation gay, and academically are no worse off than whites or any other group. I have no problem with gay people, but they sure as hell don't deserve any special treatment, besides the fact that if it gave a significant boost how many guys would all of a sudden become "gay" for the admissiosn process, all of a sudden to realize they are straight in college.

As someone said political activism for the gay community could be considered a plus, but so could political activism for any cause, not exclusive to gay rights.

No, being gay doesn't help in most cases because most elite campuses already have an ORM (over-represented minority) status with respect to queer students... like UCLA -- about a dozen groups already on campus...

when i applied to emerson EA, there was a box if you were interested in gay advocacy. also, i kow there are a lot of scholarships for gays as well.

If you write about overcoming obstacles in your essay (related to being gay), then that can help a lot, I think.

hah, all gay people are first generation because, well, think about it....

ever hear of adoption?
