I'm an incoming senior in hs, I am 1/4 El Salvadoran which apparently constitutes a "hispanic" ethnicity. However, my last name is Adams (not exactly your typical Latino lol) I consider myself white because I'm 3/4 white but my parents insist that I list myself as hispanic on all forms, tests, etc. I have a 4.45 weighted GPA (3.85 Unweighted) and I scored a 2000 on my SAT, hoping to score 2120 or higher on my October SAT. I have been on varsity track and XCountry since Freshman year and am in Mock trial, CSF, NSHSS and am going to be secretary/founding member of Key Club at my school. I believe I can write a stellar essay. I'm aware that my GPA is just average and that my SAT scores are perhaps a bit low for Stanford but I'm wondering how being listed as Hispanic affects my chances if at all for this University. I hate taking advantage of the system like that if it bolsters my chances (which are slim, I know), but I want to know if race will affect my admission.

If I were as lucky as you are (I’m Asian), I’d apply as Hispanic. That said, you’ll lower my chances of getting in there, so don’t ;)

It helps, but you’ll still want a higher SAT. Nowadays many Hispanics are scoring high on tests and GPA as well.

I’m half latino and my last name is Scottish. If I were you I wouldn’t do it because they might think you’re lying. Put that you’re half and half

addymithas Sorry! Haha

I’ll try for a 2200 but I don’t know if I can get that

Yes it probably does, and I think that sucks for all of us non-minority status kids…

First of all, you don’t want to get in just because your hispanic, you want to admitted because your an amazing canidate. If you don’t participate in any of the cultural traditions or don’t even identify yourself as hispanic, then DONT WRITE IT. I understand you really want to get in, but be truthful.

Totally agree with seattlebulldog. Plus you won’t even get in just because youre 1/4 Latino, if anything it’ll help if you’re on the fence

How? Unless you’re Hispanic, he won’t “lower your chances” at all. Asians get compared to Asians, Hispanics to Hispanics, et cetera.

Anyways. OP, being Hispanic won’t give you as big of a boost as you probably think.
But I agree with curryrocks - it won’t be THAT much of a deciding factor, per se, unless you’re on the fence.
If you really want, put that you’re Hispanic, then check White, since Hispanic = an ethnicity.

All students are considered as to whether and how they meet the standards of Stanford. Then they look at you as an individual. Having an Anglo last name does not mean that you are lying, there are plenty of hispanics who have anglo or otherwise sounding last names. As LaChicaBuena states note that you are white AND Hispanic. Hispanic isn’t a color, it’s an ethnicity. Perhaps you will find some level of curiosity regarding your Latino roots. As long as you are taking on the mantle perhaps you should consider taking on the search for understanding.

If you don’t feel any connection to your Latino background perhaps a reasonable approach is to check multiethnic or not chose to answer that question at all.

Hispanic doesn’t get you in. Your own accomplishments get you wherever it is you end up going.

Latinos/Hispanics at Stanford are every bit as capable as any other ethnic group. You have to have whatever it is Stanford requires and is looking for to build their class.
Ethnicity is just one part of the puzzle and it definitely isn’t THE thing that makes the difference.
CurryRocks- bad advice, I am going to assume you were kidding!

Best of luck TY!

Stanford Class of 2015 :)

don’t forget about the ACT. I neglected to even look at a practice book until right now, the summer before my senior year, and the ACT seems much easier to me (at least when you compare the results of my practice tests on the ACT to my actual SAT score of a 2260).

APPLY AS HISPANIC!!! As long as you are more than (1/8) hispanic you are absolutely fine to apply as hispanic. IT WILL HELP SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!

however being hispanic is going to help when you have mediocre ECs and test scores…

i say that if you get a 2200 or a 33 that Stanford is a mid reach. right now there’s nothing that makes you stand out…

goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!
