I am wondering if being recruited as a walk-on for a D1 women’s sport helps with the admissions process at schools like UNH and Towson?
I don’t have an answer but I am confused. I thought a “walk on” was a currently admitted student who showed up for tryouts when school started. How would that help with admissions?
No for this sport girls are recruited to walk-on to the team just like other athletes are recruited but the difference is the walk-on doesn’t get an athletic scholarship. There is no showing up and trying out. There are about 24 kids on the team and only 12 kids per year have scholarships, but typically only 3-5 seniors leave per year leaving openings on the team. So maybe only 2 scholarships are given for the year and 3 kids join the team without scholarships…and maybe if all the stars align for a walk-on in one of her 4 years she could get a scholarship. Does that make sense. So even if you are wanted by a coach (being recruited as a walk-on) you have to get admitted to the school first. Does that make sense?
If you are “recruited” work with the coaching staff to go to bat for you to see how they can help with admissions. I would think it can only help you.
