i know name value is superficial
but still.. it exists in real world America

I really want to know whateast coast people think of CAL compared to the big name schools
also..
I know far east countries (specifically south korea) know Harvard, Yale, MIT, Caltech.. and don't know brown, georgetown, princeton, and cornell...

i also heard they think berkeley ranks among those schools.. u think that's true?

ive lived in CALI all my life
but have a south korean ancestry :)
i have high gpa and pretty good sat scores.. so getting into berkeley with a nice essay wasn't too hard..(esp cuz im a cali resident).. i know its much more competitive to get into harvard and yale
but i think what you just said was about right
i really wanted to go to brown.. but got waitlisted
i told my grandparents in korea that i'm probably goin to berkeley
and for weeks they've been buying everyone they know lunches and dinners
they just went estatic.. they told me they'd rather have me go to berkeley than brown (they've never heard of it)
but i was thinking maybe it was just them haha

Hmm. Most of my relatives in China and Taiwan know of Princeton...that's an interesting observation you make. I wonder if it's specific to certain countries? Many of my relatives haven't heard of Gtown or Brown either, but they all know Berkeley and UCLA, and for some reason are all very familiar with JHU.

I have a great Princeton story for you. My girlfriend's class valedictorian got into Princeton. She was on the phone with her grandmother in Taiwain, and was really excited to tell her where she was going to school. It went something like this.

"Where are you going to college?"
"Princeton."
"Princeton? Where's that?"
"It's in New Jersey."
"...."
"...."
"Grandma?"
"Is that in America?"

Berkeley's definitely a recocgnizable name all over the world. I have relatives In Russia who know of Berkeley and only 3 other american schools (yale harvard and priceton)

i'm a south korean international student, and i chose cal over ucla due to the name recognition in korea. i wanted to go to ucla, but it simply doesn't hold up in korea as berkeley does, and this showed from the amount of financial aid i was able to get from korea... the THES rankings really helped berkeley out for its international prestige

koreans don't know princeton? are you kidding me?

you have to note that those rankings come from a chinese university, so obviously there's going to be a great disparity. i have seen those rankings before, and while i agree with them more than the us world and news rankings, they are somewhat inaccurate. there's a wiki on why they are controversial:

i do not deny the fact that berkeley has a very recognizable name, but truth be told, most people would choose hypms over berkeley. i am an example; i chose mit over berkeley engineering.

[edit] and yes, i prefer the THES rankings over the rankings done by the chinese university. this is the 2005 THES rankings for those who are interested:

S h I k K r U h: i've been to the east coast; they don't consider cal on the same level as hypms. in fact, berkeley isn't mentioned very much in the east coast because so many other top tier colleges are there.

I'm in NJ...a lot of people regard it highly, but not that many apply because Cali is so far away from home, and it's OOS acceptance rate is notoriously low.

I definitely know in China, a lot of people know about it because two Chinese nobel prize winners went to Berkeley to become professors.

It's not that much heard of in Canada. Relatives in Canada think I should attend McGill over Berkeley (which they haven't heard of).
