Does Boarding School lower college chances?

@RileyFreeman, Deerfield has awesome athletic facilities and it is not a SINK or SWIM School. We have a very close-knit community and amazing school spirit. We need to Beat Choate and we need your help! Go Big Green!!!

Love your spirit, Chrysanthe. Go Choate! :)

@ Chrysaanthe I love Deerfield It was my favorite school when I visited schools. But i know those top ten schools the students have ssat scores in the 90th percentile. They are pretty much straight A students a lot from prep schools.

I am a B student from Los Angeles Unified School District. I remember in elementary school my mom would give me work books to do at home every day. At school because I knew the work already I helped the teacher. As the only english speaking student in the class I would help my peers with math, reading and writing.

I remember my mom fighting with the schools demanding they teach me. I remember one of my teachers saying they couldn’t help her. I thought it was so embarrassing now I get it why she was so mad at the schools.

I know even if I do get in that first year especially first semester is going to be really hard academically if I don’t have help or shall I say guidance

I believe I can do it if given the chance

but i am being realistic about my chances

RileyFreeman - That certainly is quite a list. Obviously some of those schools rank a bit higher than others, but all are excellent. If I were you I would think about size. Big or small? Does the school have day students or all boarding? Suburban or urban? Most importantly, I would look for the right “feel”, which only you can define.
My son is at St. Paul’s and absolutely loves it. That being said, maybe you are looking for something different…

@RileyFreeman, B average is not bad considering you have to balance your athletic practices. SSAT average is 90%, so there are matriculating students above and below that average. Not all admits have straight As. The schools also consider how you utilized your opportunities at your school and not all admits come from prep schools. A good number of them come from public schools as well. Keep in touch with the coaches and if you have a top choice school, let the coaches know. At Deerfield most of the faculty lives on campus, so it’s easy to get help. We also have peer tutors in the library almost daily. So there is support. Good luck on M’10.
