I’m a sophomore, going to be a junior next year. I have a 4.2 (weighted) GPA so I decided to start looking into ivy’s. I found out that Brown has the best Comp Sci dept. and I was wondering if this is true?

Probably. It’s insanely good. Famous alumni, everyone i know who did it either has a lucrative job with google, microsoft, or pixar.

And the grads I know in comp sci also really love Brown and had a great time there too! (and all the ones I know have a great sense of humor too. Interesting observation when I think about it.)

NRC rankings:
Princeton, Penn, Harvard, Cornell, Columbia, Harvard, Dartmouth, Yale, Brown (in that order).

These are grad rankings so they may not say much about the undergrad programs, but they give some idea of department strength.

^ The NRC rankings I’m looking at show (descending) Cornell, Princeton, Harvard, Brown, Yale, Columbia, Penn, Dartmouth.

[NRC Rankings in Computer Science](NRC Rankings in Computer Science)

Brown’s department suffers in this ranking because of its relatively small size. The quality of the undergraduate computer science experience at Brown is not accurately suggested by the graduate rankings. Being interested in computer science should never be a reason to choose another school over Brown.

^ You’re looking at the 1995 rankings.

^ Can you link me to newer results? I have found two other NRC rankings, different from what I originally found but also not in agreement with yours (note also that you’ve listed Harvard twice).

The Ivy League is a freaking athletic conference. Theyre obviously all amazing schools, but there are computer science programs ranked higher than Ivy’s. CMU comes to mind, I’m sure there are others. Not that going to an Ivy is bad (obviously), but you shouldn’t be so focused on the brand name.

Doesn’t Brown provide their CS undergrads with A LOT of amazing facilities like dual monitors?

Although my S loved what he saw when he visited the CS dept. at a Brown open house, I don’t think they’re ranked higher than Cornell or Princeton - don’t really know about the others. However, I think it depends on what you’re interested in too. Princeton is ranked very high, but they don’t have the game design/virtual reality that my S is looking for - it’s more engineer/hardware oriented. Brown, Cornell, CMU, Tufts, and MIT would be better for those.

^^^^ silverturtle, you can find the most recent NRC rankings (2010, I think) here: [PhDs.org: Jobs for PhDs, graduate school rankings, and career resources for scientists and engineers](http://www.phds.org/)

My error on listing Harvard twice: the second listing should be removed.
