I know you guys get a lot of these chance threads, but one more can’t hurt!

My SAT scores:
800 reading
800 math
620 writing (stupid stupid stupid writing section!)
also a 720 US history SAT II. I’m currently waiting on a score for the level 2 math exam

AP scores:
US history: 4
European history: 4
BC calculus: 5 (I took IB math HL 1 last year, which is roughly the equivalent of AB calculus, so i’m hoping that’s a bit impressive)

I play 3 instruments: cello, violin, and guitar. I was the principal cellist for the school chamber orchestra for a while, so I’m pretty good at that. No formal achievements for the rest though.

I can also solve Rubik’s cube in ~18 seconds average

classes i am taking this year
IB Chinese
IB Economics SL
IB Math HL 2
AP Composition
AP Biology
AP statistics

My GPA is what troubles me. Unweighted it is around 3.5, which is a bit low from what i have seen on various stat pages. I’m also a bit lacking in the extracurriculars. Unless the instruments count, I only have a year of optimist club(which was a bad idea).

My test scores are fairly good and i have a passion for mathematics, but there is a C+ or two on my transcript. I’m getting almost straight A’s this semester to make up for it, will that be enough?

Also, I’m sure the instruments could serve as ECs, and they are also very interesting! From the number you are able to play, I’m sure that music is a passion of yours, and it’s something that makes you have more depth and uniqueness. Not everyone can play that many instruments, and well! If that’s something that you really love, make sure to portray it in your essays…it will show!! Also, congrats on the great test scores!

You deserve to get into Brown, that’s all I have to say.
There’s no reason why they shouldn’t take you.
Are you thinking of applying to Brown ED?

I think the answer is yes, but admittance is not assured because of the low admit rate at Brown. If you drop anything, drop the econ first, stats second and where is AP English?class. My dd got into Brown with a 3.68 UW-- not soooooo different than you. Her weighted was much higher. I think she had 5 AP classes and several Honors. Maybe less than you. Her school was rigorous and didn’t let you take AP unless the teacher allowed it. But she had the very best rec’s, and an EC hook.

Edit to say, I just saw the Comp class. Sorry, my mistake. For you, I think that you will do well to be as individual as possible in your essay. I think that my dd had a killer essay, exceptional recs, and a bonafide EC. You seem interesting, so work that angle.

You sound like you can stand out pretty well. Smart guy, maybe the grades don’t reflect all of it (I’m kind of like that too), and you’re taking Chinese and play the cello. I’m not sure the violin or the guitar would hold much weight, only because they’re pretty common instruments for people to play.

How tough is it to get into Brown as an international asking for aid? Extremely tough? Or do they have ample funds even though they aren’t need blind for internationals ?
