I am a high school junior, and am considering auditioning for MT next fall; I am passionate about MT and LOVE performing and have lots of experience (voice, dance, acting). But my ultimate goal is directing (directing musical theatre). Can I major in Theatrical Production/Directing at BSU and minor in MT? I want to study directing, still have a chance to perform, and get a good education in both.

Nick 21792,

Yes, we have a Directing major. It is called the Production Option and it is available to all students after they take a series of courses and receive a B or better AFTER their freshman year. While we have no minor in MT, all students can audition for the shows…including musicals. Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for your response…it’s been a while since I could check back to the forum. I would love your opinion on my ultimate question…I am worried that the directing option will take me away from MT and put me in the world of plays, which is not where I want to go. And after 4 years without performing (because I feel realistically all the roles will go to the MT students) I will not be marketable as a performer, and who wants a 22 year old director…? Will I have to turn around and take 2 more years of school to get a masters in directing to be considered?

Do the directing students work on the musicals, or just plays? Because at least that would keep me in what I love. I am leaning toward majoring in MT and trying my hand at performing and then working my way in to directing from there. Does that make sense?

Any insight you have would be helpful…I am an Indiana kid, and BSU would be a great location for me…but this decision is harder than I thought. I need someone with a real knowledge of the program to tell me what BSU’s best fit is for me.

Thanks!
