say i took an exam in 2008 and i cancelled it this month. does it look bad if the college i attend next year sees that it's cancelled when it gets the report in june/july? this was a self study exam.

from the college board website regarding cancelling an AP test grade:

Grade Cancellation
Grade cancellation deletes an AP Exam grade permanently from your records. Grades may be canceled at any time. However, for grades not to appear on the current year’s grade report, AP services must receive a signed, written request by mail or fax by June 15. While there is no fee for this service, your exam fee is not refunded. The grade report that you and your school receive will indicate that the grade has been canceled.

if it says canceled does it look bad though? i’m asking about colleges’ perspectives towards seeing a canceled score.

You don’t send AP score reports to colleges until after you are accepted to the college. You don’t send them as part of the application. AP scores are self reported. Therefore, if you cancel a score, it will not be seen by an admissions officer at all. It also means that it silly to cancel the score. If you don’t like the score, then don’t self report it.
