Does Carleton College give merit aid???

Just wondering if anyone knows if Carelton offers merit aid?

Based on their website it appears they say that if you don't qualify for need based aid, then you could possibly get an on campus job.

Has anyone received merit based scholarships from them???

Thanks =)

A little bit, according to the CollegeData web site (2008 data):

Merit-Based Gift Received by 158 (8.0%) of undergraduates without need, average amount $3,395

It appears they participate in three merit aid programs, but it appears to be very minor compared to need-based aid.

[Carleton College: Admissions: Merit Scholarships](http://apps.carleton.edu/admissions/topics/merit_scholarships/)

Carleton must have changed its merit awards…

6 years ago, I had a nephew get a 50% tuition merit award…(he had NO NEED…affluent parents). But, I guess the college decided to put its money mostly towards need.

D just started there. We did not request any aid (since we wouldn’t qualify). As a NMS Finalist, she received a small merit award (I think it’s 2K/yr). She filled in a Work Preferences Form and, because of experience, got a job right off the bat. I understand that it’s pretty easy to find a job by your second year.

My daughter also receives a National Merit scholarship from Carleton. I’ve also found them to be on the generous side when calculating need-based aid.

Colleges don’t award merit aid to reward good students; they award it to attract the kind of student they couldn’t otherwise hope to get. The median SAT score for accepted students at Carleton is right at 700 on each of the three sections, and 3/4 of the entering class was in the top 10% of their high school class. So there really isn’t a type or caliber of student for which Carleton would feel they’d be uncompetitive without heavy merit aid.

Technically there are only the three merit aid programs at Carleton that were mentioned earlier. Below is a discussion about this topic from the Carleton forum at CC. It may be useful to people.

however…sometimes there is a fine line between the need based aid and merit based aid that they give out. As an alumni of Carleton, this fine line sorta rubs me the wrong way sometimes. For example, check out this link below and look at the package the person got. This student was a great fit and I think the student decided to go, however the package just seems to be borderline need based vs. merit based.

This thread refers to a “Kellogg Internation Scholar” Below is a description of it from the Carleton web site.

http://apps.carleton.edu/intl/looking/scholarship/

It was an international scholarship that may not have been completelpy need based. I don’t know if there are similar scholarships for americans hidden away somewhere at Carleton. There may be.

Hope helps!
