Our hs has ~1800 kids in silicon valley, ca. A friend told me yesterday that her daughter asked her about Carleton and she discouraged her from applying since my daughter's applying ED with legacy and she didn't think they'd take more than one from a school. I questioned whether having a few from the same school was any different than having one from our hs, one from the other hs in the district and 1 from each of the privates. Seems to me that just having a different hs name on your sweatshirt won't do anything for diversity. Anyone have any experiences?

My D., a freshman at Carleton, told me that another girl in her Texas hs class of 600 was accepted at Carleton, too. She ended up going to another school. There are so many more important variables for the admissions staff to consider when putting together a successful freshman class. I wouldn't think the fact that students go to the same high school would be of much interest.

I also asked an admissions rep and was told that the applicants from each decision type (ED1, ED2 and RD) are grouped by state and evaluated. One year 5 came from one hs in Seattle. So it absolutely is NOT a competition between friends at a single school. (PHEW)

i think our school had seven acceptees.

My high school had a number of admissions to Carleton.
The admissions office does an excellent job of looking at each application individually.
I honestly believe that my application was fairly weak in comparison to the other applicants from my high school.
This being the case, I still feel I was a middle of the road applicant for Carleton in general.
Due to this, I believe that any applicant, no matter the school of origin, stands an
equal chance of acceptance at Carleton.

wow, i can't believe how well-known carleton is at some of your schools! :) maybe it's because we're all the way out in los angeles (at a school where most students knowingly avoid middle states), but none of my teachers or my guidance counselor even know about carleton... much less other students. according to one of our school websites, no one (or very few, if any) has applied to carleton in the past five years or so.
