My son is applying to several schools with the Common App. He does not need financial aid, but it sure would be nice. Should he check that he plans to apply for merit-based aid? If he doesn't check it, can he do so anyway?

If it asks if he intends to apply for merit based awards and he does intend to do so just answer it yes. That question is going to have no impact, one way or the other, on whether he will be admitted. Note that not answering it does not prevent him from doing so later but not answering it because you have a concern that the answer can impact on admission decision is unfounded and really something you need not be concerned about.

If he doesn’t check a box for merit aid he will probably NOT be considered for merit scholarships. If you are able to pay in full (with nominal federal FA) then go ahead. But it shouldn’t affect the application, particularly if he is a high performer for which the school might compete.
