Do certain major choices affect admissions at the UCs? Will it increase of decrease my chances if I go in as Nondeclared, Chemistry, or History?
-
What is your intended major? Competitive majors are just that, competitive so to be admitted you will need higher stats.
-
Some UC’s admit by major in certain colleges, such as the College of Engineering. Some UC’s admit first into the University and then into the major. Some UC’s admit into the College and then you declare your major later.
-
The more competitive the major, Enigineering/CS/Biology/Psychology, the higher the chances if you do not select that major initially, the lower the chances to switch later.
-
Many students are unsure of their major choices so it is fine to pick something you think you want to pursue, but if you are sure, then apply for the direct admit (if available).
If unsure, then it is OK to go in Undeclared as long as you are aware that changing majors later may be limited.
Never use the “back door” method by picking an easier admit major to get into the University and then try to switch since it may 'back fire". -
In the end, what is more important? Getting into the University or getting into your preferred major?
