Hi, I'm a freshman and I am trying to run for officer positions in the clubs that I am passionate about. However, it seems to me that club elections are basically popularity contests, so I was considering running for positions like secretary/treasurer/etc instead of president/v.p. I know I might sound like a freshman obsessed about college (I intend not to come back on CC for awhile), I just want to know if top colleges care what position I am if I am dedicated to the club. Say I become secretary/etc in 2~3 clubs (that I like), would they think that I don't have enough leadership to become a president?

Also, since I might not come back on CC for awhile (since its causing so much stress :P) I want to ask a question I've always wanted to ask. At least for now, my passion is playing drums (and music/guitar). I plan on becoming the section leader in my school's marching band, playing drums at my church's praise band, joining my friend's rock band as the drummer, and giving drum lessons (junior year). I want to do these things because I want to, but I also want to stand out on my app 3 years from now. Would my passion stand out at all? How can I make my passion clearer?

Officer positions matter as much as you do with them. I was President of Debate, and so I single-handedly taught a class for a semester (teacher was ignorant about debate). Thus, it was much more important than, say, treasurer. However, if the titles were just for resumes and you couldn’t indicate much difference, then it’s not very useful.

I think your passion and dedication to what you love will stand out. write a good essay about it.

My D stopped all school ECs beginning junior year to train a young horse and share her love of riding by being a youth coach (volunteer). She had tons of hours and her dedication showed.

I think it may be refreshing to Ad comms to see you pursue your love, not what you think will look good on an app.

And D got into 2 ivies, and several top 10 schools (5/6 acceptances)

I’ve seen comments on CC saying that it’s useless to be a president/etc if you don’t show commitment to it. I also read that even if you aren’t a president, you should be fine if you show commitment (even if your VP or secretary etc). How do you show your commitment to the club? Are many hours of service enough?

^Actually nvm I answered that by myself… but I have a new question again xD

After joining my friend’s band, and maybe becoming the soph rep of one of the clubs (about Cancer awareness), I’m thinking of organizing a fundraising concertish event with the band + other local bands + etc to raise money for the club/organization. Although my main reason for doing this is to help my club and Cancer research, I was wondering if this would also help me become interesting/stand out against other applicants to schools like stanford/harvard?
