Also, please can you recommend some LACs which do not put much stress on science subjects, though I'm really interested in math(I know that its really ironical :) ). I'm looking for LACs which are strong in Economics,English and Math.

CMC does have a lot of core requirements; I think that amounts to 2 science courses. You can look them up in the school catalog on the school site.

Haha I feel the same way, bigcheese--how I love math (possible major out of a double) but am not a science person. I'm sure you can find something you might like to fit into the requirements.

There's just about a requirement for every subject. If you look at the course catalog provided online with the academic policies listed: http://www.claremontmckenna.edu/admission/catalog/2008-2009/academic_policies.pdf

you can look at all the details.

Don't be too frightened... truthfully speaking having so many requirements is good because it expands your horizon of knowledge and understanding. A lot of people discover from taking some of these required classes that their true passion is actually in another area.

Also, there's a lot of flexibility in what classes to take (especially for Science). I have friends taking "The Living Sea", which is some science course for non-majors that I heard is really easy. There's plenty of interesting classes to choose from that won't give you the intimidating bio/chem/physics lab.

Also, CMC is one of the best schools for Econ. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Over 25% of the student body are some sort of econ major (whether, dual, double, single, or sequenced) Our lit program is pretty kick-butt too.

My favorite requirement: PE

You can pick any PE class to take such as social dancing, salsa, ballet, hip hop, any sport, you name it and it's probably available to take. You need 3 semesters of PE to graduate.

Hope this was semi-helpful. If you have any questions, feel free to email me: jmao12@cmc.edu

yeah, i think you're gonna find science requirements wherever you go. and i personally don't think you should make a decision based on 2 classes: what's way more important is a strong program in your interests. Econ here is fantastic, so is english. give it a second look.

I have a son at CMC but my response is more about the core curriculum issue. A core curriculum is when there is a set group of classes that every student takes. For example, accredited business schools (I teach at one) have a set of courses every business major must take like accounting, finance, business law, org behavior, operations management, etc. CMC does not have that kind of core in their general curriculum. Even their Freshman Humanities Seminar is several different classes with a common number. What they do have is a distribution requirement. This is where you have to take 3 social science classes, 2 econ classes, two science classes, etc. Theirs is fairly comprehensive and spelled out well on their website.
