Does CMU count freshman year grades?

(My high school doesn't rank students, by the way.)

No, they don’t count freshman year grades. That is one of the main reasons I was accepted. (My freshman year was horrible)

What was your GPA then, just curious?

My GPA with freshman year grades was about a 3.4/3.5 UW. Without freshman year it was a 3.9 UW.

My frosh year was a 3.333 UW. Without: 3.85 UW. and would I be a legacy if my dad went there for grad school?

^ I really don’t know the answer to that one. Legacy policy and effects on admission vary depending on the university. It is a big thing when it comes to Ivies, I don’t know bout CMU. Nowadays, it’s starting to mean less and less unless there is some $$$ hanging in the balance.

Good point. Also do you know if they include electives in one’s GPA, or do they recalcul8 it?

I’m pretty sure they take it into account. I’ve never heard of a school not taking electives into account at all. HOWEVER, if you are applying for a math/science major, you can count on them putting A LOT of importance on your math and science classes average. (they recalculate to find your math/science average)

And of course for admissions, being an URM (especially for CMU) is a big boost.

NOT including Honors Bio and Honors Geometry (taken frosh year) though, right?

I’m not a URM!

Correct, all freshmen grades aren’t counted, even if they are math/science.

Not being an URM isn’t bad, just being one helps. Basically if you are female and/or aren’t Caucasian/Asian you’re URM in their eyes…

I’m white and a girl. I guess for engineering being a girl is different hahah

CMU has been working on their male/female ratio for quite some time now, and it has rally improved. They can’t get enough girls into engineering majors. A good percentage of their female population comes from Fine Arts college.

Good, so they’ll want me!!!

Well that’s not all that they look at (essays, display of interest, EC’s, etc) but just saying it makes a difference. Good luck!

thanks  10cahr

Can someone show me where CMU states it doesn’t count freshman GPA? and also, do I include my 1st semester of my senior year in this calculation?

bump 10char

It was said by a CMU admissions officer on this same forum. The linked post is above. For future reference, the search tool is at the top of this page in the middle.
